Daddies In Film, Part 2 (Star Trek II, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings) - PATRON Version
🕑 Added 2018-07-08 16:48:48 +0000 UTC Here we go! Hope you're ready for me to talk about daddies in STAR TREK and STAR WARS and LORD OF THE RINGS for 20 minutes! It's almost like I'm some sort of nerd or something. I'm really really really excited about this video. Daddies part 1 was fun to do, but was mostly critical. In this video, I got to explore movies that actually do a GOOD job of portraying these relationships, so it's even more fulfilling! The scene with Yoda and Luke made me cry!!! Seriously, making this video gave me an even better appreciation of both The Last Jedi, and the LotR movies. This link is for Patrons only so please don't share :)
Let me know what you think! The comments from the last video were really helpful moving forward. We're trying to get better at mixing audio too, so hopefully this video sounds better than the last one. Or just say hi!

Came for the origin of Save Martha (and ruthless, insightful analysis), stayed to question my role in perpetuating the patriarchy 🤯😒👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Ah, these are solid points. Distilling the Khan plot down was one of the hardest parts of this video. It’s such a complex story. We didn’t even get around to mentioning Kirk’s son! We are prepping to release the video tomorrow so hopefully the Khan stuff isn’t that distracting, since we won’t have time to re-record more VO. I’ll try to come up with a more accurate title 🙂 Thank you, David!

Good stuff. If you're still looking for feedback, could you add a little more dumbed down context for the Star Trek 2 section for Khan? I hadn't seen it in a while and forgot he was that tribe's patriarch. I literally was trying to remember if Kirk's dad was in the movie. Also, the title Better Dads is a little misleading as more than half of the video is still negative dads.

Thanks, Steven! We looked up Joachim’s info on a Star Trek wiki while finishing the video since the movie is unclear. I’d say that visually we are supposed to at least think of him as Khan’s son *thematically* but I don’t think he is, technically. The wiki said something like: in the original series episode, his name was Jochin, and due to a typo, his name changed for the feature. But there’s also a non-canon book where Jochim is actually Jochin’s son, or something. But yeah, I think it’s more symbolic than literal.

I hope to get at least one of the following to see this video: Nicholas Meyer, Rian Johnson, Peter Jackson, Mark Hamill! Wildcard: George Lucas.

Nicely done. It's been a while since I've watched Khan, but wasn't Joachim more than Khan's crew, wasn't he Khan's son? I could be remembering that wrong. It's been a few years. (another great video)

Great job Maggie! These videos are looking better and better with each one, I hope you keep making more of them. Also I look forward to your podcast about friendship. Nice rip on JBP btw lol. You're going to make me rewatch TLJ again. Also you should totally tweet this at Mark Hamill after you're done! He seems to really appreciate fans that actually think about the work he did and I'm sure he would love your take.

Thanks, Misha! If/when I do more videos in this series, exploring mothers would be really fun. Sarah Connor is fascinating, for example.

Really interesting video. I hadn't considered most of those movies in the light of parental figures. How about a video or two about mothers in film as well? Keep creating those awesome videos!

I have been dreading receiving a note about Owen Lars ever since we recorded that dialogue!
Very insightful and entertaining as well as informative. Liked your facial expressions while reading Yoda's rulebook (you look like you're barely suppressing a laugh at one point). Sorry to be carping, but I would refer to Luke Skywalker's uncle as "Owen" instead of "Lars", even though Lars is, in fact his last name. That's still far less awkward than Superman referring to his own mother as "Martha", however.

That Jordan Peterson subtweet was perfect

That was fantastic. I laughed out loud at a couple points.
Some notes: The audio is solid. I didn’t realize until today how much I love the background. It’s so balanced and interesting, but not distracting. The editing is delightful. Especially the Cumberbatch part. That *smooch* had me laughing out loud. Your points are on point. You never lost me. Even though I questioned how much I remembered from the previous video when I started watching, it all came rushing back. I felt smarter after watching this video. I am a very happy patron. That being said, you could fail, and I’d still support you, but this isn’t some weird daddy thing, so it’s all good.
