I just started using the Parallax as well. I love it. It adds a new dimension and look and feel to the game. Not the same old same old.

Sort of. By default, RPG Maker offers preset tilesets to create maps but they limit you to a somewhat small number of parts. Parallax maps use a set of images as layers (like in Gimp or Photoshop) drawn by the creator. Their details are limited only by the time you want to invest in building such maps.
