Which Planet is Closest?

What I like about this video is that if you search for "mostest closest" this video is the one that pops up. And Mercury handing flowers is cute!

Olivia Appleton

So my friend was telling me that the MLP references are a long-standing joke, but I only remember seeing one in this video, and another in the brain one. Have you talked about this elsewhere? I feel like I missed something

Tony M

This may sound completely ridiculous, but I really want to set that animation at the tail end as my desktop background and just stare at it for hours.

As a side note, eliminating Pluto, God of the underworld, from the pantheon is wholly consistent with your drive to eliminate Death as an arbiter of human fate.

Dan Grigsby

This just tickles me. Makes me glad to have reinstated my Patreon account to support you, Grey.

Felix Freiberger

If more of this is what we'll get under the new monthly model, count me as an even stronger supporter of this switch than before!

matt

this is the cutest thing - like really hitting those notes, where it's informative, it clearly communicates info and provides easily accessible data visualization, and there's a nice dose of humor to go with it! new CGP content always has me salivating. Thanks for making it special!

Chris VanAvermaete

Great concept, great execution explaining the concept. Would have also answered the basic question of who is closest if all the planets lined up (i.e. who has the potential to be the closest under ideal conditions), but I guess that's why this is a shorter video. Could really expand this into all kinds of orbital mechanics and travel questions if you wanted.

Mo Cassidy

I presume the extension of this logic would be that The Sun is on average closer to Earth (and every other planet) than Mercury is? By the power of Ra!

MegamiTenchi

Knowledge-Question feedback loop for the win <3 This was wonderful, thank you, CGP!!!

Kristina

There’s a big push for youtubers to develop videos that are 10+ minutes long, for YouTube to monetize, pack with ads, and then promote. They tend to ignore the shorter ones (as far as what the algorithm pushes to viewers)

Matt Hessinger

The return of the footnote video. Outstanding. :-) May future Grey have yet another inspiration to rail against YouTube feature changes!

Niv the Fox

I mean, this is why Mercury is the Messenger. He's like the cosmic mailman, picking up letters so he can pass them on to whomever needs them next!

Igor Sokolov

I don't know why this video is something special in terms of support, but I absolutely loved it :) Good example of your very good videos :) Were such videos uncomfortable because of "pay per video" and it is too short to be paid like this? In this case, yep, monthly donations are more convenient. But I personally care less about video length and more about your overall content quality. And this one is definitely within your high standards, I think :) And I believe most of your patrons would agree)

Matt Dupuis

Super cool!

Olivia Appleton

You mean the lineup? Nah, it's just supposed to be showing the order. If it was doing distance to scale it would be really really big. Jupiter is ~5x the distance to the sun that we are. Neptune is ~30x.

Olivia Appleton

Great video! Kinda wish you'd explicitly mentioned delta-v though

Alvarin_IL

I was of the opinion that Earth is the closest...

Daniel Haas

I love the new word choice and diction you've developed with these new videos, with rhymes almost in meter. Keep it up!

ConspicuousCompiler

I love how Saturn has a bloody mouth from having eaten all of his chlidren.

Brent Hollett

Wait, I thought the illustration was the distance from the Sun to each planet? So it's a representation of a conjunction that never happens?

JatootyJabooty

Loved it Grey

Dragi Raos

Excellent little piece illustrating the importance of formulating one's questions precisely and unambiguously. The animation is, as usual, superb.

Orion Dye

Your probably not going to read this CGPgrey, but just wanted to say you nailed this video! Really enjoyed it and looking forward to future videos. πŸ‘

Rok PuΕ‘nik

I think for long term sustainability there will have to be a few patreon shoutouts per year still, if he's properly ditching all sponsorships

Sean Munson

This is the kind of change that makes me proud and happy to have become a patron last month.

Vlycop

awesome video, plus i like the fact that there is no "thank's to the patreon" ladida at the end of the video. it's cleaner and we don't need that :)

Fuesu

Thank you Grey. I'm happy to know that I have contributed.

This video inspired me to write a song – "I'm so Mercurial".

Michael Sepcot

Where was the β€œa few thoughts” video taken? That place looks amazing 🀩

Thomas Maurstad Larsson

Loved the video. I live for stupid little anecdotes like this

Zeragamba

Wait... At 2:06... "Oh my Celestia" with Princess Celestia's mane's colours flowing from the page... No way...

Glenn Johnson

Wow! This is brilliant. I have never thought of orbital mechanics like this before.

CCalvinN

Awesome! I love many lengths of videos and have seen many of my favorite creators go down the path of "longer video = more revenue". I tend to wonder how much better the videos may be or what other subjects they might explore if they could do shorter videos. Now I know.... the videos can be just as enjoyable and grand. Thank you Grey!

Matthew Ross

Nice one Grey! Love that you're able to make stuff like this now, keep it going <3

Matthew

That was πŸ’―.

Julio Castro

Thank you grey

Greg Giles

I am thrilled to be getting more fun content like this!

Sebastian Persch
