ValkyrQ wrote to me asking how I managed to make my Ivara look like that in the final picture. I told that one key for Ivara's cool look is that she has gradient parts in her texture, that's why she's so colourful. Then I went back to my project to make some examples how the picture is built up, especially at that part.
I've figured this could be an interesting post for some at patreon, so here we go:
This is just her Lineart. It has transparency, based on how hard I pressed the digital pen onto my tablet, the lines got darker. The Marker brush is just like that.
Because of the transparency, the lineart is actually coloured, based on the colour beneath it. Notice how the lineart is dark brown at the left side of the inner part of the hood, while at the top it's really dark orange. (This is why working with this brush as a lineart is troublesome [if ya wanna colour too], cuz the colours under it need to cover the lineart's whole region to look good.)
Added a yellow/orange-ish gradient starting from the opening of her hood and also a darker orange at the back part. Clipping mask is used here to save time.

Added energy effect.
This is how one layer of shadows out of the 2 looks. This one has no soft edges. More seen on the left side of the pic, at the inside of the hood.
The other layer of shadow is the brush I use a lot. Especially noticable at the backgrounds of my pictures. It has a pattern and can be used as a gradient; the more I use and press it, the darker the colour will be.
This is how the 2 layers of shadows combined look like. It has more depth at the bottom part of the hoodie, seen on the right side, it's more darker there.
This shows only the lighter parts of the drawing (no shadows). I've also realised I forgot to use 2 layers of brighter parts like I usually do. So the final picture only has one, instead of 2. xd
This was the gradient light layer. The 2nd wouldda been the one with sharper edged lighter surfaces. (altho I think it looks good enough, so no need for a 2nd)
This is the final result, every layer put together. It's the same picture as the very first on this post. Shadows, lights, colours together also used Layer effects at some (especially for the shadows and the energy effect).

Yes, actual drawing on paper and irl is for hardcore badass artists who do not need any rubber.. and are on the same lvl as Bob Ross. (no pressure, and just happy little accidents. xd) I have a few videos (3) here at patreon about how I work on some of my older projects. It can be helpful, or at least interesting to watch em, if ya haven't already: https://www.patreon.com/smutbase/posts?filters[tag]=video (these are also up on my googledrive if you don't want to download them) If you already have experience with drawing and all, it won't take long for you to feel comfortable with digital arting. Just need to find the brushes you like the most. And yes, layers are a miracle and really helpful while creating. Personally, I organise every colour on a different layer and folder. Sometimes even the lineart has multiple layers (then merge them together if I feel like I'm done with the lines). But there are people who do everything on one layer, so they are the brave ones. xd

I just realized I had mentioned the inspiration on your most recent post when I had mentioned it here. š Yeah I have heard that you just have to play around a lot to see what fits ones style. I have a lot of artwork on paper but one thing that always irritated me was smudges or a marker not working with me and ruining a perfect portrait. Digital of course I can just undo it or erase things without a problem now. Iām still new to digital which is why I like to asks artists what they use to play around with the same program. Little by little Iām getting there and hopefully I can do beautiful art work like you as well. I love seeing how you draw and color as well because it helps me to understand how layering works and all too so you definitely won your support from me for a very long time. š¤

When I started drawing digitally, I used a scanner and photoshop's pen tool. Using vectors, I created the lineart I previously drew on paper and used only a mouse for creating digital art (this, of course required a lot of time, but still kept creating something). Then I got my first digital drawing tablet in 2008, seen some japanese artists using this program and got to try it out myself. Nowdays if I draw something on paper and like it, I just take a photo with my phone and work on it further on pc. There are a lot of ways of making art now, so you just gotta try out what's the most comfortable for you. If actual drawing is too stressful for you, you can try out 3D. I recommended that for VallkyrQ back in the day, and he really got into it. xd I'm happy you like my art and inspires you to make your own. I hope you'll find joy creating your imaginations into reality! It truly feels like a magical thing :>

Thank you for sharing what you use as well as your art with us. I have come to admire your work so much that I have even taken the path of hearing my own art work with Gwen and Venom as well. This will help immensely to see how I can digitalize mine as well. š

I use Paint Tool SAI (version 1) for drawing. I've been using it for like 12 years (and still don't know every function or feature of it, but that's fine xd). For the final touches I use Photoshop CS6 (for changing the contrast, sometimes the colours for the whole drawing and do other adjustments). I find SAI more comfortable and easier to use than photoshop. Even the brushes are more fitting for me (or more like I've got use to them). I'm glad you liked my lil presentation! c:
