Hahahaha! Mysterious poof popcorn! And always such insightful comments! They're both a delight to read, and a dread that you will stumble upon something you're not supposed to, and that I will have to gaslight you, hahaha! As for the characters, 3 "interesting" ones, and 3 "mary sues", eh? It's an interesting analysis, though perhaps, there is darkness to be found in the "mary sues", and light to be found in the "interesting" characters... Or, who knows? Hehe!

Faces The Wind

This whole thing is a master stroke of character development. So much was shelved and unaddressed with the pressures to move the story along and the survival nature of their situation. Having them dumped into a storyline and power/ability relevant reason to be forced into introspection is perfectly timed at the moment they try to find their footing and done in a way that does not distract from the story arc. Brilliant!

Faces The Wind

Nar "I don't care what my future self is like so long as its strong" the Champion... doesn't have a specific affinity defined and ready to unlock? such shock! so surprise! Also, Viy having truly weaponizable levels of guilt is so perfect, its on par with raging inferno Mul. Props for having such an iconic duo in this party. Honorable mention to Jul experiencing the fear of fear itself there but thats more archetypal than iconic. I suppose the three are a dark triad. Fear itself (Machiavellianism), angry boy (psychopathy) and guilty girl (narcissism). Top it off with being branded for life with their paths being defined by their teen angst! This is perfect emotional counterpoint to Kur and Gad just wanting to be "good enough" so badly that they become exemplars... potentially Tuk too. Is he just a good natured dude who wants a better life? The first group are so cliched that they are at risk of derailing everything for their own arcs without outside input and the last three are so boring and capable that they risk making everything as bland as a mary-sue. Can they make it work? They're a symphony of disquiet and healing! Why is my popcorn always gone?!?!?! OMG!

Lucas Onderwater

Oooh! If that's the case, then it could maybe explain why she refuses to talk about it?

God

I have a strong feign that what Viy did has something to do with the unclean

Lucas Onderwater

Hmmm. Some affinities are harder to unlock/get exposure to, so there's that to consider. But also, maybe there's something about himself that he doesn't fully understand yet, or his feelings are unresolved/conflicting in some way? Or it could also be his class, or sometimes, there can also be different kinds of blockages too... But they're outside now, so hopefully, there will be something that resonates with him

Lucas Onderwater

Maybe there are some hidden depths that even he himself is not aware of yet... Or maybe its a difficult affinity to unlock? 🤔

Heavenward

Nar know himself so well at this point tho, why didn't he get his affinity?

ALEXEI

Hopefully we don't have to wait till the end of book two to find out his affinity.

Eric Andersen

Though thinking about it more, Nar didn't fully accept his aura as a part of him until the literall last minute of the climb, so maybe it's an exposure thing?

Eric Andersen

That was... strange. You'd think with how strongly Nar feels about certain things there would be at least something there. Maybe it has something to do with his new class?

Gabriel Victor

I'm very curious about what Viy did to be burdened by such crushing guilt.
