Faces The Wind

longsword enthusiast here, my experience is in large and small group amateur sport combat. Its exposed me to lot of different people with different martial backgrounds and that little note about keeping your head steady is pure gold. Its a pretty universal concern. Same with the note on his instructor shoving him to show him his balance and the note on loosening up. Every version of trained/learned footwork I've been exposed to had those three basics at its core. Stability, reaction speed, and keeping your head motion smooth. The variations largely affected the forms of mobility such as rapid small steps vs lunges that they were trying to favor, or the form of leverage or torque they were trying to exploit... but always stability, reaction time, and keeping your sensory/thinky bits optimal. All in all this amateur enthusiast of a couple decades was impressed this chapter! Hardly authoritative but there you go :)

Hey there! Thank you so much for letting me know!! I've taken a note of this, and will have a look again when I get to Book 2 editing. I myself have never trained in any sword fighting, so I tried to read about it and learn through videos as I wanted to make it a good bit realistic, hehe. I think most of what I learned falls into the german school of fencing, if I'm not mistaken? Hopefully, to someone who's had training, Nar's training sounds correct and realistic-ish enough? What do you think?

Just as an fyi as a person that has some experience in sword-focused martial arts (albeit with katanas), depending on your position, leaning towards the back or the front is encouraged to dodge or to hit something just out of your reach, and also to keep your center of balance relatively even. A longsword is heavier than a katana and has different moves though, so that may not apply as clearly. It's a lot of fun reading the training :) I'm excited for the new lessons!
