While watching Rebel Moon the Star Wars influence is obvious but what I haven't seen as much discussion on is how much David Lynch's Dune there is in this movie. Maybe that's why I find myself appreciating such a deeply flawed film.

I was not expecting that Rebel Moon was worth a 16-minute video essay but was happy to be wrong. Though is it really a good thing that it exists, or just a sign of how stagnant movie-making has become that Zach Snyder doing his thing an eighth (?) time feels fresh and vital?

To paraphrase xckd #918 my take away from this video is this: Darren: You should watch Rebel Moon! Me: What is it? Darren: Not Star Wars! Me: What's it like? Darren: Star Wars! Me: Oh what the hell, I guess that's all I really wanted.

There was a time when I would have given anything to get a sequel to The Iron Giant, but at some point adulthood sets in and you realize that if you just want to see characters retread the same ground in the same universe, that's just cheap escapism, the Doritos of art. Even if you hate what Snyder cooks, it's still an actual attempt at a meal and it's still unmistakably his.

Zack Snyder makes movies that you see in the background of other movies, for better or worse. It'll be interesting to see how many strong opinions of a movie that isn't even out yet spawn from the YouTube comments. Lol
