The "Giving Up Your Escape" section seems pretty relevant across the board to anyone considering trying to monetize their hobbies in some major way online. It certainly made me reconsider some of my daydreams. :-)

You guys should check out Adam Srayi. The quality of his YouTube deserves way more subs than it has.

Remember, the origin of the word “passion” means “to suffer”, so if you’re passionate about something, you’re willing to suffer for it. So yeah, I agree that the “never work a day in your life” line is totally bunk. But if you find a job you love so much you’re willing to suffer for it, well, you have it a lot better than most!

Awesome insight. I'm intrigued by this part though : "the corporate games media landscape is falling apart and everyone working in it knows it", if you're willing to tell us more 😇

You did it Nick 💪😊 Proud of you old boy 🙏 Great advice from someone who has lived and breathed these experiences. I enjoy that you're willing to be what comes across as open and honest about what you've found through your time and your trials. I hope this helps some folks make good choices. Cheers! 🍻

To be clear, I didn't get a job in corporate games media until 2018. Before then I was running my own sites for $0 since I was a freshman in High School in 2009. So, my advice remains the same, don't become a ragebait YouTuber if you want a longterm career doing this stuff because you will burn a lot of bridges doing so.

Skujat

Thanks for being real. I can´t stand it when people say stuff like "do what you love and never work a day in your life". Losing interest in or starting to my hate my passion would probably come sooner rather than later. Developing an urge to jump out the window would be next-_-

Zach Sheffler

"Oh, and don’t become another ragebait YouTuber who puts their big dumb face on their big red text thumbnails." Counterpoint: a similar or greater number of people have become prominent gaming media figures by avoiding traditional media altogether and instead focusing on social media (mostly YouTube). Nick's path through corporate media is an artifact of starting out at a time when "full-time social media influencer" wasn't a viable career option, but the ten-years-younger version of Nick would almost certainly be publishing on social media today. Hell, Second Wind itself is basically set up to be a social media management operation. Like, yeah, some people are bad at being YouTubers, but that kicker reads the same way that "Oh, and don't become another game blogger for IGN" would if it were written in Game Informer in 2002.

aaaaa

Thanks for the article. I am a big sucker for process stories

It’s always great to see a peek behind the curtain. I knew a lot of people in school or uni who wanted to go into games journalism or streaming or whatever because they thought it would be easy and fun. None of them kept up with it and it’s clear why; it’s a job and a career path like any other. Certainly put the kibosh on my idle daydreams of streaming in my spare time haha

Matt Couture

Really eye opening. Whether it's pieces like this or the sharing of revenue reports, I really appreciate everything you're doing to show how everything runs behind the scenes. Makes me appreciate all the awesome work you and the team do that much more!

Burritosocks

love the insight.

I've been one foot out the door on my current career path since I was working 100-hour weeks in construction engineering, so these "what you need to know before you start a career in ____" are always nice reads for me. While games journalism was never a target for me, I'd definitely considered YouTube, streaming, or otherwise becoming an online personality as a side hustle. I'm glad to get this insight from Nick, so thank you for the column, sir!

I feel that part about the mental switch when you start writing about games. I might be a nobody, but still, ever since I started making videos I had to start playing games with a keyboard next to me to take notes, think of jokes as I’m playing the game, create a narrative or thinking of how I can connect that specific cutscene I’m watching to other stuff I’m gonna write. It’s not exactly super fun

Column from Nick? Hell yeah!
