In retrospect Scholar of the First Sin feels like the beginning of the shift towards frustrating difficulty. I was exited to get back into Dark Souls 2 but my god those npc invaders.

I've had almost the exact same arc that you describe. DS 1 in particular was my entry point and I fondly remember a few friends jumping to the rescue so I don't give up + going through obscure wikis and ASCII maps.
