Came up in some other comments, but in retrospect it's easy to see the core idea that makes this genre work; the problem with a lot of horror games is that it's easy and sometimes outright encouraged for players to not actually engage with the horror, to learn to bypass or fight it, and how tricky it is to get players to look where you want them to without taking their autonomy away and taking them out of it. But in this genre, players HAVE to pay attention and focus on the weird shit, being paranoid and thorough is literally the core gameplay, whether with the subtle things or the blatant.
