Turning an exquisitely crafted subtle narrative experience where everything has meaning - into a 'procedurally generated' (albeit pretty) disorienting mess is just disappointing. I was already incredibly nervous about it being 3d at all - the calm, meditative pace interspersed with occasional hectic battlesof the first game did not seem like something that would translate well to 3d. And given that it's procedurally generated - which means just randomly generated - is just... it feels extra pointless. Imagine if a Zelda game announced that the overworld and dungeons were now to be randomly generated slop.

If that's Hyper Light Drifter's intro, what's the rest of the game like?ππ

I'm very glad you're finding ways to just make things that don't need to be part of a series. Loved Bytesized's experimental phase at the beginning. Concerning the topic, it shows once again that developers should be very careful what they put their focus on before going early access...

Great essay! Itβs a particular type of heartbreak when a talented studio flubs hard. Their transition from 2d to 3D gaming seems not to have gone well (I loved the design and story of their follow up to HLD but also found it incredibly frustrating to play).
