It's also attracted comparison to board games, primarily Betrayal at the House on the Hill. Oddly enough the map randomisation and puzzles made me think of MindMaze, from good ol Encarta.

I was pretty much there right up until the random number generator. My patience with roguelike shenanigans whimsically telling me I can't win because RNG says no is frayed to the nubbin.

This pretty much is the sort of thing I watch Yahtzee for (other than obscene jokes dunking on games I don't like), helping me find those rare gems of weird and clever games and filtering them from the ones that just pretend to be weird/clever.

Hate to tell you, this isn't a "new" concept. There was an indie horror game called Kraven Manor from 2014 that did the building the map first.
