Radical series change that didn't work out - the new Civ changes are a pretty relevant example! Trying to improve a game thematically *and* in terms of gameplay isn't a zero sum prospect; improving one doesn't necessarily have to come at the expense of worsening the other. Firaxis made the decision to improve gameplay at the expense of massively worsening the thematic feel of Civ, and imo this idea needed a lot more time in the oven. From interviews it seems like the dev/publisher response is largely "We needed to do this to improve the loop!". This to me implies that they thought the tradeoff was inevitable, which I don't think is true.

Ah, Monster Hunter, a series that does its own thing and gives no care. (Also, the best weapon is the Great Sword, because hitting monsters with raw iron is amazing).
