I remember it being grindy as well. Although at least they were trying to make an open ended world to interact with. Too many games today dont aspire to anythign but spectacle.

The Xbox version adds a lot of great stuff that lets you unlock new things after every time you retire your captain

Essentially, your crew eventually goes, "Yeah, this is great, and all... But when are we going to get to LEAVE this ship and SPEND all this gold on rum and sex?" Which, you know, fair enough; a few years on a pirate ship, I'd be ready to stab the guy in the next hammock over his foot hygiene, too. So, disband, start a new boat, watch your stats slowly crumble.
