This is overly simplistic to the point of not only being full of outdated info, but also falsities. People in the mesolithic and neolithic moved around more, but not quite as much as some might think. Tool making was frequent, and required resources to do. What we actually see with a lot of populations is there being not only art, but long periods of inhabitation. We frequently do have people living in one area, or sometimes only moving between a few set locations for long periods of time. Evidence of this is far reaching, with sites like Skara Brae in the Orkney Islands, or Göbekli Tepe in Turkey. While Tepe is associated with the very early agricultural revolution, what is less well understood is whether people started to live in one location due to agriculture, or if the opposite is true, that agriculture followed after people decided to settle in a singular place and would then do it. There is also plenty evidence of people doing horrific things to each other prior to agriculture, early people definitely did practise war and conflict on each other both before, during and after the agricultural revolution. It's also fairly well believed that people would have just as much time during the hunter-gatherer period than agricultural, as can be seen from cave art or musical instruments. There were also plenty of people doing things other than hunting or gathering. You had people who would look after the young and the old/infirm. You had people that were skilled craftspeople who would be making stone tools. As an archaeologist, I do not have all the answers. Anyone involved in history that tries to tell you they do have the answers is either lying or trying to sell you something. There is so much of human history we do not have a full story for, especially the lives of everyday people. What we have is the archaeological records and collaboration to try and piece together fragments. Sapiens is an ok book, but it's not what I would recommend from an archaeological background.

One of the most fundamental reasons for going from Living to survive, to Living the Way we do today has to do with the invention of agriculture, which allowed a few people to make food for a lot of people, which then freed up other people’s hands for other things. This however also meant that we became sedentary and stopped Living “in sync” with Nature. In stead of moving Around depending on the seasons and where the food was, we now lived in one place, and the population started climbing rapidly. This led to farmland being increasingly important, which in turn led to conflcts, war etc. It also created a ruling class which were able to control huge landmasses through the use of violence or the threat hereof. The Ball sort of rolled from there. Of course there are a lot of other factors as Well, but I believe the introduction of agriculture is the single most important Force of change in Human society and culture. Making people dependent on this one thing, and unable to move about chnged the Way we live as a species. Of course there are also good things that come from this, such as medicine, art etc. In general however, working farmland required Way more constant work and attention, Since you would simply starve if Your harvest failed, while hunter-gatheres in general works Way less Per day, and have to ability to move somewhere Else if food is getting scarce. There is a book called Sapiens, by Yuval Harari which touches on this (and Many other things) that I really recommend. It is not overly Long and its written in a Way that is easy to understand, even if you have little knowledge on the subject beforehand. Anyways, Thanks for coming to my TedTalk
