It's a LONG story but the short answer is that they were best friends as kids but the inner drama of their two fathers running a business together forced their friendship to an end. Shane's father then made it worse by feeding Shane lies about Carey to keep them from interacting. So now they have a lot of animosity towards one another that (in their canon, non-kink fueled story) will eventually be resolved and they'll be friends again.
