This is standard Apple behavior that they do to pretty much every third party app. A good example of this is for iOS devices YouTube Premium is 18.99, if you sign up on a desktop it's 13.99, and you can still use it on your phone if you sign up on a desktop. Don't sign up for things through the app when you can avoid it, web browsers tend to be the way to go, preferably on a computer rather than your phone.

This is a problem that would be present in any app on the iOS store, it's something that Apple has been doing all over the place. It's possible for consumers to bypass this by signing up on a browser (or at least has been), though I'm not aware if this would work on the recipient end

This is how it's always been with Apple, they take a cut from ALL in-app purchases. The easiest way to avoid that is by subscribing through patreon.com. You can still use the app, as long as you don't use it to subscribe to creators.
