Nah, you're absolutely right about Hunter X Hunter looking cartoony! It's definitely intentional. The contrast between how tame and cutesy the show looks versus how dark the story and the music get is part of the appeal, I think. Really cool to see you break this one down!

Please do not be fooled by Hunter x Hunter. It will mess up your feelings and make you feel like crap, sad, wtf, at times. With that being said, it is also funny, brotherly, playful, etc. Like you said, it is too many episodes for you to get to when it gets real.

The thing about Hunter x Hunter is, its starts very cartoony, and it slowly becomes darker, and the story arc from which this song is from is about how our happy and go lucky protagonist slowly losing his humanity in situations of extreme stress, while inhuman antagonist of the arc is becoming more and more human.

the music in this show is god tier. There is still some upbeat and cute music during lighthearted parts but it just happens that the darker moments have the amazing darker pieces that you covered in your reactions.

The over polished style of the 2011 hunter x hunter is my biggest gripe! It's still probably one of the best anime of all time but I like the original manga and the 1999 anime's style more. A reaction to the 1999 anime would be amazing, it's only 50~ episodes (minus fillers) so it's more manageable. Even though it's old it has some of the best animators that's still around today.

It’s my favorite anime for a reason. It’s able to capture some fun and goofy moments all the way to tear jerking or very serious situations that have you on your toes. Its hard to explain without spoiling anything so you should definitely give it a watch sometime!

If you remember, the latest piece from HxH that you reacted to had a pretty harrowing visual accompanying it, that's more representative of the story at some points. The cartoony artstyle can be very deceiving not only in HxH, but in a lot of anime/manga.

Hunter x Hunter definitely is able to cover that big of a range from light and fun to serious and dark like this theme, that's what makes it great, makes for a great depth of story.

about the artstyle. its just the style of the author, and the time it was released in. also for the fact that its in shonen jump, which is more for younger readers then something like Young Jump. (it was also a weekly realse so it may have been easier to do a simple maybe even cute style then a detailed and gritter one) but dont get me wrong Hunter X Hunter can be VERY dark when it wants to be dont let the art fool you. its just that the show also has alot of happy moments, a good balance. its also less dark in the beginning of the show. another example of a show with a cute artstyle that has some of the most fucked up moments in anime is made in abyss, the anime is dark as shit and you would not see it from the artstyle

Yeah, years ago (prior to watching) I thought the same of HxH just based off the same things you pointed out. That all changed when I watched it. The music fits the scenes they play in.
