I believe he's 16 years old so... it's been like 10 years, quite a few. There's definitely some feelings there but he also finds Thorfinn as a valuable fighter that he can manipulate and use. It would be a waste to just kill him.

This episode has some nice themes, from the irony of the master beating the slave; while ,at the same time, being a slave to money. following immediately Thorfinn ,being a slave of vengeance/anger, belittling the slave girl as well
