his good moments kind of suck though. They dont feel earned and they have no consequential change on his character making him better. He's just really fucking annoying and then randomly cool/good moments happen entirely outside his volition or ability.

I think some anime viewers genuinely do enjoy the things that we find annoying. I have a pretty high tolerance for it but that doesn't mean I enjoy it, but I feel like the gaslighting that you mention is what I've seen when people defend other shows. I'm not gonna sugar coat it the show is Black Clover and I found very large portions of that show insufferable because a majority of the main cast is just variations of Zenitsu but then I'd see people saying how much they love the show and it's characters. While I acknowledge the occasional lows of Demon Slayer I think the highs easily make up for it. Black Clover is not worth it in the slightest, because the highs are cool but there is way too much suffering consistently and constantly between them.

Tanjiro HAD to watch Zenitsu get beat up for a while. Otherwise, how could they end the show on the cliffhanger of him going to do something about it? 😛

Having annoying characters in anime is a trope but of all the anime I have watched, Zenitsu is the one that annoyed me the most. So much so that I almost gave up on Demon Slayer. However, I am very glad that I didn't. I liked the show up to this point but I LOVE the stuff that comes later. So take it from a fellow Zenitsu hater, I found the rest of the series to be more than worth it. He does get "better" to the point I actually started to like him as a character. Though he never got to a point for me where he stopped being annoying sometimes, but those scenes became more tolerable. I've rewatched the series a few times now and I feel like he's the most "screamy" during his first few episodes. He will still do that later on from time to time but it's not for the entire episode. I doubt you'll ever like him much but if you were able to tolerate this episode, most of the ones coming up shouldn't be terrible for you. And the other scenes in the show more than make up for it IMO.

While I don't find him nearly as grating as most people do, I absolutely understand why he's such a polarizing character. And for someone to basically say y'all are a bunch of babies for getting annoyed so easily is really stupid.

That's the thing with these characters, they make him have a ''bad side'' so when he has his good moments it makes a good contrast.

Too bad those moments are few in S1 lol. But those are some of the best animated action scenes in the anime and they start kicking off in S2 and I’m excited for that.
