Watching Canute remember his brother so fondly even as he conspires to murder him is still so surreal to me. He's fallen into the same trap as all utopians. It has become impossible for him to commit moral error. Those he betrays and conspires against are necessary sacrifices to create paradise and surely they would agree if they simply knew what he was trying to do. I think him talking about that being all there is to it is some extremely dark irony. What he has done is no small thing. He has murdered his brother. But he has convinced himself its no big deal.

Using Canute's decapitated dad was a great creative and story-telling decision as a way for us the audience to learn of Canute's thoughts about what he's doing while also presenting the moral comparison between him and his dad (or people like him) in a direct (and visual) manner.

Canute does have a higher purpose. He’s had one ever since he had his awakening in season one. It’s to create a peaceful utopia (so in a weird way it’s the same as Thorfinn’s, they’re just going about it in different ways). The question is how far he’s willing to go to achieve that. The “Is that all there is” line at the end is more about him knowing he’d need to do some truly heinous stuff to achieve goals and suffer the emotional consequences of it and there’s no doubt he’s hurting but it’s no way near enough to shake his resolve (at least in his mind). So if anything, it’s about the strength of his commitment to a higher purpose not a lack of it.

My brother hearing you say you're getting the books made my night. Make sure to read Yukimura's afterwords in each volume, they give really interesting insights into his thought process and there's tonnes of additional detail about the region and time period too!
