Guessing from details: A sun lamp to (try and) keep him from fully "wolfing out", curious caregivers (nurses and/or doctor) who decide he needs "tender loving care", a contagious condition. (Hmm, maybe the nurses are surprised but still succumb, partially because the doctor is already "infected"?)
