gorgeous work ❤️❤️

Thank you for the insightful reply, it is so relieving to hear these words from you ❤️ I’ve been hard at work to detach myself from the very strict, rigid part of me that sometimes inhibits me from just… being me and creating without thinking “is this enough?” or “is this unique and not a ripoff of someone else’s work?” It’s a struggle, but I feel I’m getting a little better at it each day (therapy also helps) I’m very much looking forward to seeing your reference boards!

Literally the exact conversation I was having with Kitt🐰 this morning 😭 Not including East of Eden tho because I've never read it haha. Something something under capitalism is also the conclusion we came to also🙃

Kevin Williams

Also these are good and cute and I like them.

Kevin Williams

One of my favorite books (east of eden by John steinbeck) makes the claim that "there are no true collaborations," because every project has a leader, and that genuinely almost ruined the entire book for me. Like, living in and of itself is a collaborative process. Philisophical Individualism is just a cancer we endure to justify [something something alienation under capitalism]

Winton Kidd

Thank you Wuff!!❤️

Oh wow, Libby looks absolutely fantastic here!

Making art is such an emotionally messy process sometimes, adding commerce makes it even stickier, and adding another person starts to make it feel messier still, but it's definitely less lonely. Ultimately I just have to remind myself that things that feel this difficult are probably worth doing because there's gotta be a really huge reward on the other side.

Winton Kidd

Thanks for reading them, Maynard! 💕

Heeeheehehe you could indeed say that 😂 People will think it's just a weird typo haha I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that push and pull. I often think that this job is like take a big unwieldy blob of creative energy and just stuffing it through a funnel to make something consistent on the other end. It's really unnatural and difficult but it's the way we pay the bills. I think it's good to have a low pain tolerance sometimes so that you give up driving yourself endlessly to burnout and make choices to make things easier on yourself. 💗I hope you do start working with a line artist for your own healths' sake! And invest in a nice office chair if you haven't already 😂 Take care Kite! 💗

Winton Kidd

Thank you Dustin!!! 🥺 I'll pass the kind words along 💗

Winton Kidd

You got a point their Kurbee🫠 That looming cloud of scarcity created by capitalism really does kind of rain on every single interaction we have with the concept of creation and ownership.☔It takes so much work to mentally sort out where bad/hurt feelings really come from sometimes

Winton Kidd

💗Thank you Taylor 🥺 Yes, I think that will always be a little part of what I do, exploring my own weird niche interests. I don't think I'd be entirely satisfied if my work turned into one big production machine, but on the other hand, working with people in small ways does create a wonderful feeling of invention because you never know what choices someone else will make!

Winton Kidd

Those are the kind of exercises I hate in the moment but really appreciate in retrospect 😂 It's an interesting experiment too--if you like the end result more than you would like your own work by itself, maybe that just means the fastest route to your creative fulfillment is through collaboration with others. 🤔 The best collaborations always feel like a trusting relationship where adding two people together doesn't subtract one from the other in any way

Winton Kidd

It's so funny and sad how you can look at my work and feel guilt/shame for needing to rely on someone else's work to inform your creative decisions when that is EXACTLY what I am doing on the other side of the internet glass 😂😭 This is why I feel like discourse around AI kind of misses the point sometimes, what makes humans special in making art is not their technical ability, it's how they synthesize ideas. Your work is special because you imagine something and then try to communicate it, it's literally the thought that counts haha-- or at least in my opinion. I'm going to start posting my reference boards so that everyone can stop feeling insecure about this 💗 because I really do believe that the creative process is looking at something else and saying "ooh I want some of that, but slightly different." or exploring a fixation on a particular visual idea and asking what would happen if I tried this same visual idea 20 different ways? ie, What if Ivan Bilibin and Edmund Dulac collaborated on a fancomic about their love of BotW's Zelda and Urbosa = Little Bird's Bath. I think when someone's work feels particularly novel and fun it's either because they have spent a lot of time crystalizing what they love over a long time, or because you're just not familiar with the references they're drawing on. Thanks for the comment ValeRipley 💗

I get the same feeling when taking inspiration/referencing other artists, which is something I do ALL the time. I’ll always keep some kind of ref board on my computer screen while I’m drawing with either pictures or artworks (usually both) I’ll often feel ashamed of myself as an artist for having to rely on someone else to define the direction of my own work, and I fear the result will be something that’s less of my own and therefore less “special” or “singular”. I mean, even when looking at your own work sometimes I’ll get kinda mad at myself. I’m like “DAMN, I wish I could get these cool ideas myself. I wish I could come up with such clear concepts and scenarios in my head and then turn them into appealing, readable drawings all on my own”. I guess I expect too much from myself in that sense. But then I’ll remind myself of that conversation we had in the DMs long ago where you said that “art is a cumulative thing that all of society contributes to”, and “everything is borrowed and recycled”. I guess it applies in this case too?

Joshua

When I was back in college my figure drawing teacher did a really fun exercise where we drew for 5 minutes, then shifted one position to the left and added to/corrected that student's drawing. I'm not quite sure what it taught me about ownership, letting go, and perspective - but I've never forgotten the exercise.

Taylor

Also you’ll always be special no matter what!!

Taylor

I think it could also maybe help to continue to have some projects/works that are “just for you,” and indulge in that feeling of this is a thing I did by myself, and others that are planned from the beginning to be collaborative?? Maybe?? Then you get some of both?? Idk lol

Kurbee

I think art has always existed for the base purpose of connection and collaboration is so intimate. Words I believe but don't often live by. Dang capitalism!

Dustin Stewart

These are adorable and I love them.

TheKite

You could say that this has been done by Winton Kitt! Huehuehuehue! More seriously I totally understand that mindset .. As artists we're gaslit both by the public's perception AND by our own obsessive selves that we need to do everything ourselves at all times and master all skills ever... then we eventually burnout or keep spiralling ! I think accepting to delegate part of our workflow, the part we either cannot do or learn within a reasonable timeframe to others can be a fruitful endeavor. All mangakas have assistants, after all! I've increasingly been talking myself into hiring a lineart artist these days, especially after my back problems starter... Don't be afraid to seek others to work with!

Thanks for the frank and authentic thoughts 🙂

Delicious!! I struggle with the same compulsion friend. Thanks for a reminder to enjoy and celebrate the experience of collaboration. 💕
