Unfair-Chapter 54: Every Little Thing Falls Apart

I'm way late to the party with comments and speculation, and everyone seems to have flushed that all out. Ok you have my emotions going crazy. NGL. I want to hate Janet, I really do, and then she does things for Clark that make me feel sorry for her. She endures his abuse, warranted or not, and shows her love, crazy amazon love but love. And then she goes batshit crazy again and I go back to hating her.

Unfair and new Narnia are SO good!

I held out for 5 days before reading this chapter. Ugh why can't this be Netflix!

Oh, I will say I am very intrigued as to what the use of the baby monitor will mean. When it was given as a gift at the shower it was referred to as a "great educational tool" I believe. I would think that it's clearly meant to educate Clark on how to behave....so very curious to see the effects of that.

So yeah, waited a few days to post a response and much of what I was thinking, others have said already. Although, I am sure you deliberately left it vague, I don't know where along the timeline "Fair is Fair" happens in relation to "Unfair." However, it does establish Cassie as clever, and definitely someone who can look out for herself. It's thoroughly possible that she was affected or targetted in a way similar to Clark, but again, we won't know until you tell us. :) Also, I'd like to punch Janet in the mouth. I mean, pick a side lady. Either treat Clark as the baby you seem to think he is, or treat him like a real person like you do when he's upset. And while the Amazon/little relationships in this world are abusive by nature in many ways, that's a level of psychological abuse that hits a little too home for me. The whole "I don't actually care about you until you're in tears" attitude in relationships is horrible. Be that as it may, and swallowing my disgust for Janet, I do still look forward to every new chapter you post.

I feel for the next few days he will become unattached then he might even become violent after that as he sees he has nothing left. So many ways it can go with Clark at this point.

I can also see a "we didn't go to school the next day" and the next chapter will be like the chapter before school, where Clark and Janet have another chat. Clark's anger and hate can't last forever, in theory, and he might burn out quickly after the initial shock. He tends to be pretty level headed all things considered.

I am surprised by the house but unsure of what I truly expected...maybe a message or clue left behind. I am curious as to what Cassie truly has done and where she is. I also agree the writing style you have does make it very easy to see this story and all components as real. I love stories where I can clearly picture everything...people, scenery, details, etc. I am glad this is updated and am very curious how the next school day plays out or the Miss Forester conversation plays out. Boges reaction the next day will be interesting for sure and Clark I imagine will be very disruptive or unattached.

The Slavin

It really shows that Clark's life is unfair, especially after what he went through to get to the point and only to find out it was all for nothing. It's easy to tell what really set him off was the idea of seeing Cassie in Boeuf's class. I can only imagine what's going through his head and how he will react to tomorrow. I think Boeuf will try to give him special treatment or something, either he will cling to her, be distant or lastly cause havoc. Personally for me I'd be distant unless people pried at me to know what's going on. I'm hoping it's not the latter of what he will do but I'm seriously hoping that Clark tells Boeuf about the Raine incident and everything going on. Since he saw how aggressively she defended him around lunch. I can't wait until the next chapter! Please don't make us wait too long

I think everyone has already said everything I could say, but I felt the need to comment anyway. There are a few stories that I follow avidly to the point at which I will interrupt anything else I might be doing if I find that there has been a new chapter. None of them, however, has been as powerful and often as *uncomfortable* as this one. I agree that Cassie has not appeared to be the most stable person in the past, but I have always felt that was because she understood, far more than Clark, the sheer cliff he was walking on. I did not see this twist coming, and I feel so sad for both of them...and Janet as well. I cut her some slack because she has at least tried—as much as her Amazon emotions allow—to treat Clark fairly. I hope that, in the aftermath of this, she recognizes his overwhelming pain and heartbreak and, maybe, starts treating him more as the Clark Gibson she knew before. Maybe even she might recognize what BS Maturosis is, but that is probably expecting too much. Unlike some others, I really don't want Clark to reunite with Cassie in Boeuf's class. There seems to be little to gain from that: it will break him whether or not she is regressed. Maybe, if Janet does change—unlikely but whatever—she could adopt Cassie too and they could live secretly and safely as a married couple under her care. I mean, I can dream, right? :-)

I did not see this coming at all. I had all these idea's of what Cassie would say or react but I never thought he wouldn't get to talk to get at all. That's just crazy. I wonder if he'll see her again down the road, then again it might be better for his mental health if he doesn't. If he was to see her again and see she was mentally regressed he would blame himself. This opens up so much, yet I have no idea where it goes from here.

It really does feel like an end to an “arc”. The first day has been and gone, we know Clark’s routine and we now have no immediate method or openings to resolve his predicament. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the next chapter just starts with him saying “I can’t really remember the next few weeks” until a new arc of conflict begins for some reason

That's what happens when you write good characters, rather than simply focus on the scenario and bend the characters to the scene. You let the characters dictate the world, and then we get attached to them because they feel like they have actual agency, like real people.

Follow up thought: You know what a chapter like this sets up perfectly? A Time Skip. Maybe a few weeks, maybe a few months. Glad you're enjoying our comments as much as we're enjoying leaving them. Honestly I thought Cassie might not be there, and that Clark would be left with a "Dear John" letter. I'm not sure this is better :P

And I'll add, besides "theories" it touches me how you're talking about Janet, Clark, Cassie, Beouf, Amy, Helena, et. al. as if they're real people, or at the very least "real" fictional characters. I love the um...squirmy parts...a lot, but they're so much better because of how these guys are "real" to me. When people react to them I get the impression that they're "real" to you, too. Like that's fuel for my soul.

So, I LOVE the discourse and theorizing here! I'm typing this just letting y'all know that I am holding my tongue and bouncing in my seat. I will neither confirm, nor deny any speculation on what's going on, what's happening, or what's going to happen. But the fact that people are talking about it makes me super happy as a writer. So I'm keeping quiet and just "loving" comments of that nature because I don't want to influence how y'all are reading this story. Correction: I DO want to influence how y'all are reading this story, just not here in the comments. I want to play with your theorizing brains and emotions in the text, proper.

It's a really strange feeling, having this little arc of the day wrapped up in a way where no one gets what they wants. But ultimately, life isn't fair, not for Clark, not for Cassie, not for Janet. None of them appear to have come out of this with anything, at all, to show for it. Janet had the most to gain in her relationship with Clark, I honestly felt more for her than Clark. She has, at all stages, tried to be a friend. Maybe it's just because I am a switch, someone who really sees that caretaker perspective, but that's where all my worries are now. Not with what happens to Clark (who’s reactions were hateful but understandable) but Janet who’s only desire from the start has been to be make Clark happy. All that bargaining from Sunday has slammed back in her face. It’s like watching a parent trying to get their child’s forgiveness for breaking their trust so completely that they just want to stop the tears.

You do so much to swing my compass between disgust and respect with Janet. all the stuff in school made me see janet as typical, but this chapter swung it right back to seeing she really is trying to make the process as much of a thing for Clark as it is for her. She's given so much more leeway than i'd ever expect from an Amazon in these stories. I imagine Beouf's mentoring on "maturosis can be rough at first" and "you have a lot of big feelings in a changing body" or however it was phrased, and to her credit she's taking Clarks (justified) abuse like a trooper. Man i did not expect Cassie to go full mental and burn the place down, though I have always felt that she was a bit unstable and high strung. But now a comment has mentioned "Fair is Fair" and i have to go back and check. Was Cassie in that? Has there been an easter egg this whole time I missed? To the archives!

I think you're right there with her guilt. Maybe that guilt also made her just allow herself to be captured? From the scene in Fair is Fair I don't think she was feeling great about things.

I don’t think she got adopted. She might’ve been a little unstable, but I think she had a good plan before lighting the place on fire. Or not. She might’ve done it in a rush the moment she realized Clark wasn’t coming home. Though a part of me thinks she was involved in Clarks downfall. I think she did it and ran because it was going to happen sooner or later from her point of view and she had to save herself. I feel so sad for Clark.

Finally Clark show his emotions now Janet is gonna pay the price since she never take his feelings in account! Curious to see what gonna happen next

Somehow I'm not surprised Cassie burnt it all down. The chapter certainly pushes her being adopted, but it says likely she's getting the care? Was she for certain adopted? If that's the case I do hope that she appears in class at some point. I'm impressed how she went down, but not surprised. She really has been mentally unstable for about the last six months before he was adopted. Still pretty sure of who poisoned him too... Guess we have to wait for closure on that. Luckily Janet is enough of a teacher that she knows he's just venting because he needs to. Most other Bigs would have stuffed a locking paci in his mouth after the first couple rants. Great chapter!
