On the splitting the bill stuff. I’ve been living in Abu Dhabi for the last 10 years. Whenever I go out with my coworkers who are also coming from western counties, we would always split the bill according to what each of us consumed. An Emirati lady that was part of our team would also participate in this. But the first time we met up for dinner with our significant others, her husband was shocked that we were doing this. She told him not to worry about it, this is how we did things. Turns out, in the UAE the common practice among locals is to fight for who is going to cover the totality of the bill. I personally find that paying for what you consume is the most fair way of doing things. I would find it acceptable to split the bill in equal parts as long as everyone consumed about the same thing value wise. So there is no one being screwed over.
