I want to point out that Ginko is, and only Ginko is dressed in a western style clothes (coat, shirt, boots) while other characters are shown in medieval Japanese attire. I think that makes him look like someone who doesn't necessarily belong to THIS world, so mysterious as is his personality.

I think some Makoto Shinkai stuff has similar atmoshpere, especially 5cm per second and Garden of Words. Not through out the entire thing, but I feel like there were very similar scenes. That being said I haven't seen either of them in quite some time so I might be wrong

Follow up comment: Your ruminations on Mushishi post-episode 3 make me think that Mushishi is to anime what a Rock Garden is to parks. It approaches the subject matter in a completely different, stripped back, unassuming and modest way that it's almost alien and yet beautiful.

Regarding the cuts in episode 2, it feels like we're seeing what Biki sees when the backgrounds by the shed are shown, and when the gradient with black is shown, it's usually framed with Sui or Ginko in the frame, which makes me think we're seeing what both of them are seeing with their "Second Eyelid" closed. We're seeing how they're both in the physical world and yet not, drifting dangerously close to the Kouki that flows below.
