hmmm i have a clockwork goo where the clockwork allows the goo to actually think and another pair of mechanical + goo concepts where one is basically "that nucleus sphere is an AI and the goo is not living matter at all, but just a ferrofluid influenced by the nucleus" and the other is: "the goo is a genius inventor but could not imitate humans well enough, so it built itself a prosthetic body to interact with humans."

yup. a friend of mind told me about a story where an AI merged with a "googirl" because she was in love with her pilot, so that concept inspired this
