Thinking about something... It's an abstract background anyway, so one could play with it. Can you have the gradient background go radially outwards from Phana? Not very conspicuously, but so that it shows that she is "radiating" with expectation. Around Kevin's head would work too... to imply concentration. Will let your artistic vision decide if it is a good idea and where to put the radiance, but my gut feelings say Phana, since she is the protagonist.

i plan to keep the flats on a separate layer and do the highlights and shading on a new linked layer so you can have both
