“Some say mirrors are just windows to other realities, and that’s why we see the world from a different perspective in them. Those people truly have no idea how close they are to the truth; mirrors aren’t just windows, but they’re doorways to alternate realities.”
“Every reality vibrates at a different frequency, but sometimes those frequencies can shift slightly, causing two different realities to come closer together. That doesn’t cause any harm to either reality, but it does cause a phenomenon called Mirror Shifting to become possible.”
“When Mirror Shifting occurs, some mirrors scattered through the worlds become portals, and when touched, they can suck the person inside them, sending them to an alternate reality, where almost nothing could be different, or everything could be different.”
“Now, while realities often get close enough to allow Mirror Shifting to happen, you have better odds of suddenly having all the blood in your body turn into helium. So there are almost no records or accurate data on the subject. Still, just because the odds are low doesn’t mean it can’t happen.”
Marcel was sitting at his computer playing one of his favorite shooters, having a great time when suddenly someone knocked on his door. “Hey Marcel, sorry to bother you, but could you take out the trash before the rain starts?” His mother asked through the door.
“Huh? Oh yeah, I can do that.” Marcel said as he removed his headset and got up. He opened his door to see his mother walking back downstairs. He followed her to the kitchen and grabbed the trash bag and pulled it out.
“Thank you, sweety. Oh, and dinner is already made and in the fridge. I’ll be going out tonight, so don’t wait up, and don’t play too much of that game.” His mother said as she grabbed a new trash bag. “Thanks mom, and don’t worry, I won’t play much longer. I hope you enjoy your night.”
Marcel said as he turned around and brought the trash to the front door. He walked the bag of trash down the driveway to where they kept the trash barrel. He opened the lid and tossed the trash in, and a second afterward it started to downpour.
“Damn, the rain came in quick, and it’s coming down hard. I should get back inside before I catch a cold.” Marcel said as he put his hands above his head and started running. As he made it to the door, his mother was stepping out with an umbrella.
She smiled at him and shook her head. “Make sure you get those wet clothes off; you don’t want to catch a cold.” Marcel let out a laugh. “Don’t worry about me mom, I know. You go have fun; I’ll be fine.”
Her smile widened even more and then she nodded, turning around and heading towards her car. Marcel turned around as well and headed all the way back to his room to toss his wet clothes into the laundry hamper.
After he got a pair of pajamas on, he saw something move on the side of him. He turned to look and didn’t see anything at first, but after a few seconds he finally noticed what was moving; it was people, and they were in his mirror.
“What the heck is going on? How… How can I see people moving in my mirror?” Marcel said as he got closer. As he got closer, he saw a very cute girl with pink hair in twin tails on her knees crying while she held her face.
Next to her, standing above her and looking down at her with a look of disgust on her face, was some much older blonde-haired woman. “Who are they? And why does this give me a bad feeling?” Marcel said as he continued to watch.
Suddenly, without warning, the black-haired woman kicked the pink-haired girl, knocking her over. “HEY!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING???” Marcel yelled as he touched the mirror, furious at what he just saw.
Suddenly Marcel felt himself pulled through the mirror and flung into the other reality in which he had been viewing. Once he was in the new reality, he was flung right into something, and a moment later Marcel felt a ton of pain.
“What… just happened… my stomach… hurts…” Marcel said as she held her stomach. “Hey, you little bitch, I bet it does. Serves you right.” Marcel was shocked to hear a woman's voice and turned her head to find the black-haired woman she saw in the mirror.
“How… how did you get in front of me?” Marcel asked, extremely confused about what was going on and why she was in pain. “Shut up you spoiled brat,” the woman said as she kicked Marcel again. “I don’t care if you’re eighteen; you live in my house, so you follow my rules.”
“No speaking ever.” The woman said as she kicked Marcel again and again, causing her more and more pain. “Why… Why are you beating me? Who… who even are you?” Marcel tried to say, but the woman was too busy kicking her to hear.
“She’s… she’s my stepmother…” A feminine voice said inside Marcel’s head. “Wait… that voice is different. Who… who are you, and where are you?” Marcel said quietly. “Well, I’m Marceline, and I think you sort of took over my body.” Marceline said, sounding scared.
“I… I took over your… body?” Marcel said as she managed to open her eyes again and looked down at herself. Sure enough, she was in the body of a woman. She was wearing a super cute blue dress and had the body to fill it out well.
“How… How did this happen?” Marcel asked as the black-haired woman continued to kick her. “I… I don’t know… I was on the ground in pain, then suddenly I felt like I was hit by something, and that’s when you took over… Other than that I know nothing…” Marceline said worriedly.
Before Marcel could respond further, the kicking stopped and Marceline’s stepmother stopped kicking her. “Alright, I think you’ve had your fill for tonight. Once you dry those tears, go downstairs and clean the kitchen; it’s a complete mess.” She said before turning and walking off.
Marcel sat there sniffing and waiting for the pain to stop. Once it died down a bit, she was able to sit up and look down at her hands. “I can’t believe I’m a girl… but more than that, I can’t believe your stepmother treats you like that… What’s the deal with that?”
“Oh, it was my fault… I forgot to take the trash out when she asked… I got distracted by pretty flowers outside.” Marceline said, panicked. “Excuse my language, but what the fuck are you talking about? There’s no way forgetting to take the trash out makes it okay to beat you.” Marcel said furiously.
“You did nothing wrong, and it’s clear you’re being abused…” Marcel said, letting his tone get softer. “I… She’s not really that bad…” Marceline muttered. “Oh yeah? Tell me, how often do these beatings happen?” Marcel asked, already having an inkling of the answer.
Marceline got quiet for a moment. “Every day… sometimes more than once…” Marcel shook her head. “Yeah, that’s not right. My mother has never once laid a hand on me. Speaking of, if you have a stepmother, does that mean…?”
“Yeah… My mother, Magret, passed away when I was little. My father, Herald, married my stepmother, Jeriko, last year, completely out of the blue as well… Ever since then she’s been living here.” Marceline said, sounding quite upset.
“Magret and Herald… those… Those are my parents’ names as well… My father, Herald, was the one who passed away when I was little. Ever since then it’s been just me and my mother, but it’s been nice; she takes great care of me and loves me…”
Marcel said as she stood up. “Your stepmother is clearly evil, so I understand why she does that, but what about your father? Why does he let her treat you that way?” “Well… because he doesn’t know… She doesn’t treat me like that when he’s around, and I haven’t told him.”
Marceline said, sounding a bit ashamed of herself. “Why?” Marcel asked as she walked up to the mirror. “Well… I guess because he’s so busy and never home, and I didn’t want to take away his happiness that he gets when he’s with Jeriko…”
Marcel’s heart suddenly felt like it was ripped in two. “I… I see… You’re a very kind person… But, what’s happening to you needs to stop… It’s not right, nor is it good for your physical or mental health.”
“I… I know… I just can’t bring myself… Jeriko has told me if I did, my father would be single and unhappy. Plus… I’m really afraid of her…” Marceline said in a shaky tone. “I see… I believe he may end up single again, but he’ll be happier knowing you’re safe.”
Marcel lifted her hand and placed it on the mirror, but nothing happened, nor could she see through it to her reality. “Well, I think I’m stuck here… at least for now… And since I’m the one piloting this body… I say we do something about that stepmother of yours. What do you say?”
Marceline got quiet again. “I guess… No… You’re right… Let’s do it… and by that I mean you… I’m still way too afraid to do it myself… plus I can’t move our body currently…” Marcel let out an awkward laugh.
“Yeah, sorry about that. Wasn’t my plan to end up in another world and steal your female body.” “Female? Wait, you’re a boy!!! That’s so gross, but I guess it’s not your fault… Oh, by the way, what’s your name?” Marceline asked curiously.
“Oh, it’s Marcel…” Marcel said with a bit of an awkward laugh. The two of them realized they must be the same person from different realities. “Well, that’s interesting, another me… well, other me… Marcel, thank you… more than anything, I think I needed someone I could talk to about all of this.”

This hits a bit deep, but I think I agree with you. It's awful and there doesn't seem to be anything that can be done, but I believe without a doubt that all children deserve to be loved unconditionally. I just wish all children had parents that they could trust and felt safe around.

hmm very interesting... looks like we will continue to watch the "looking glass" and the number of characters only grows I wonder what will come of it. as for this story specifically, it should be noted that for some reason something like this happens all the time - other people's children are not nearly as loved as their own, even if this child calls you mom... alas, but nothing can be done about it - bad parents were, are and will be and nothing can be done about it, just like with unloved non-native children, only truly kind people can accept someone else's child as their own, but alas, there are very few of them
