The card trick working is actually only mathematic and quite simple at that if you know how it works: If you take any given number, add 4 to it and multiply that by 2, you always get "twice your number plus 8". Substact 6 and you get "twice your number plus 2". Dividing the whole thing by two leads to "your number plus 1". Now substract "your number" and you allways get "1". So the tricks works with any given number and not only numbers between 1 and 13 :)

Lol, the anime completely fooled me there xD I totally took it at face value, since it was explained so matter of factly as a concept, and even had started to theorize whether the guy in the end screen might be a doppelganger of Illumi xD

In the manga, there was more blood when Hisoka lost his arms. After losing the first arm and picking it up, he bit off a strip of flesh hanging off of it and ate it before tossing the arm up to the ceiling to begin his card trick. The card trick also worked on me, surprisingly (tried it with the numbers 2 and then 9, the two most visible cards in the panel). When Machi told Hisoka the boss’ message changed, she meant from the meeting/mission being for “anyone with nothing better to do” to “everyone must be there.”

Back in episode 16/17, when Gon got Hisoka’s tag and was then paralyzed by Geretta there was imagery of a hemophilic butterfly trapped in a spider’s web and being devoured. I think that was the earliest hint of Hisoka being a Troupe member (the spider representing him, Gon the butterfly).

Boy, if you thought THAT explanation was wordy and long, wait until the later arcs. It, along with Jojo and a few other shounen THRIVE off of explanations. Oh, and fyi, it just comes down to psychological misdirection and manipulation is how Hisoka won, along with his Nen abilities. Hisoka took advantage of the guy's 2 years of training just to obtain a doppelganger and disregarded all other basics and tools of Nen.

Nen is a really deep power system so it bears full explanation. Other anime doesn't need to explain their power systems because most of the time they don't make any sense, but nen is very logical. You'll get way more enjoyment out of nen in the future if you understand how people use it and what's possible.

I'm quite sure the reason for the lack of blood is just that the anime had an earlier time slot when it started.

The doppelganger dialogue was a bit misleading - I think Togashi just found the concept/myth of doppelgangers interesting so put that in there. As Wings concludes, "that's just a story", and that what's actually happening is that Kastro is creating a double out of nen.
