Dang

You know I like these older Chapo appearances but they always have that nervous fella on them

Man, would love to see this episode revisited now that Schwartzwelder basically said everyone that interpreted the meaning of this episode was wrong.

“Homeboys in Outer Space” is a punch-line of a show but I did some digging and prepare to have your minds blown. In terms of Nielsen ratings “Homeboys in Outer Space” seemed to fluctuate between a 2.9 and a 2.2 (see links below) <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/style/article/TV-newsmagazines-hot-topic-in-week-s-Nielsen-3140988.php" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.sfgate.com/style/article/TV-newsmagazines-hot-topic-in-week-s-Nielsen-3140988.php</a> <a href="http://www.sfchronicle.com/entertainment/article/Last-Don-puts-CBS-first-3118733.php?cmpid=gsa-sfgate-result" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.sfchronicle.com/entertainment/article/Last-Don-puts-CBS-first-3118733.php?cmpid=gsa-sfgate-result</a> Let’s call it an average of 2.5. Sounds pretty tiny don’t it? In 1997 it sure was but the television world has fragmented an incredible amount in the last twenty years. How much? Well if Homeboys in Outer Space had received that _exact same_ Nielsen score average for 2017-2018(the last year we have full numbers for) here are some shows that it would have higher ratings than: The Orville, Modern Family, The Good Place, Family Guy, The Simpsons, X-Files, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and every superhero show currently airing! My how things have changed.

When I was a kid watching this episode live for the first time, I was indeed very confused but somewhat laughing about how Grimes was a straightman to Homer's antics. I have to thank all for of you hosts for pointing out the meta-ness of it, because I once pitied Frank Grimes for one set of reasons (mostly the adversity he faced), and now I pity him for the adversity he brings upon himself as a member of (Springfield) society. At least on the last part it looks like Grimey doesn't really have much of a life outside of the Foundry and the Plant, and what he mostly does in the episode is try to complain about Homer Simpson instead of trying to make friends or allies or assets out of the rest of the power plant. I just wonder if Swartzwelder intentionally made Grimes as "weird" as he is, or he's (unintentionally) satirizing those Randians who piss off his libertarianess. In any case you don't pick a fight with a charging bull or a hurricane, you can't win.
