Great episode analysis, though I couldn't help but miss Diana Goodman from your original podcast. Do you think you might have her on again sometime in the future? Sadly, I know that Donnie and Marie Star Wars sketch because I actually saw it originally broadcast. I think I may have had a Milhouse-sque meltdown waiting for the laser battle/fireworks factory that never came. Meanwhile, my older sister loved the show and sometimes she'd enlist 5 year old me into her Osmond themed play. Thank god my health insurance has decent therapy coverage.

Is it weird that I heard that quote in my head in Marge's voice

At least in the original Jazz Singer, the blackface has extra meaning: Back then in America audiences wouldn't allow a Jewish performer to take the stage as a Jew (or a jewish performer wouldn't be booked in many venues, would be blacklisted, etc). But as a blackface character, the places would allow it and the audiences eat it up. So although it has aged poorly at the time it is key to the point of the story and has a parallel to the clown makeup in this episode.

Everyone needs to watch "I love to Singa", a Looney Tunes cartoon telling the same story. Absolute classic. Only video I can find is this partial on YouTube https://youtu.be/my_G8-omvT4

Also, sorry for the double comment, but the complimentary pickles automatically made me think of Cantors (my go-to deli of choice), and when it came up on the podcast, I had to pop back in to say that the free pickles justify the high prices, really. Technically they're not free I guess, but if you ask for extra, in my experience, they are VERY generous with the pickles, and they're also the best pickles in LA. So yes. You do have to pay almost $30 for a pastrami sandwich, but you if you can also sweet-talk your way into getting your bodyweight in free pickles, it is well worth it (and the pastrami itself isn't bad). (Also, Mel's Diner, which I think is in the bay area too, still has sandwiches named after celebrities.)

I grew up in West Michigan in the '90s, and our Liz was named Miranda. And we did get WGN, but we also had our own local Bozo his name was (is? I think he's still alive?) genuinely, actually Dick Richards. My mother loathed him. He used to MC my dance recitals (not in clown garb, sadly) when I was little, and just as I'd imagine Krusty himself would have, he would tell lots of old Catskills-comic—even Vaudevillesque—style jokes, and she found many of them sexist and offensive. I can still hear it: "I just don't think mother-in-law jokes are appropriate for a children's dance recital."

“Are you reading Yes, I Can by Sammy Davis Jr? Did you get to the part where they’re at the Copa…”

This episode has some of the craziest off model krusty faces. I am amazed and at the same time disgusted by the ren and stimpy faces he makes while crying on camera

The episode they mentioned was such a classic, too. When Niles is literally dressed as Jesus and they find him hiding in the bathroom with a Christmas tree. ^_^

Man, I NEVER saw the clip on the sex line ever before. It must have been cut out of every version that showed up in Australia.

I wake up in a cold sweat every night because of this flub

Disappointed that this episode had a Frasier reference without Bob saying “Oh Henry!” in the Frasier voice.

Love this episode. I always thought the radio show presenter was just bored with hearing the "does God exist?" question every week. He rolls his eyes like "Not this again". ^_^

It's funny, i think you can hear it in bob's voice as he realizes he flubbed the line. It's DANISH not sandwich, a funnier food what with their creamy middles...
