To answer your question about the uniforms; The German uniforums you noticed looked more formal were the Wermacht (Ver-mocked) uniforms. The Wermacht was essentially the regular German army. These were designed to project professionalism and discipline. belive it or not these uniforms were actially vastly much less fancy then the Nazi SS uniforms, which were saved for the most radical of soldiers. The Americans (as well as most other armies) were much less concerned about style.
