Great observation about the way American soldiers / marines would hold the machine guns. Towards the start of ww2 the Marines were still given water-cooled machineguns used in ww1 (Thats the gun with the big fat looking barrel) and basically oven mitts were used to hold them when nessesary. Later in the war the marine corps were given the same iconic browning machine gun that we know from ww2 that had the handle you noticed.
