Hi Chloe, I like oiling out a painting (or an area of a painting) before making adjustments on top of it or doing another layer. You don’t need to oil a finished work. When I’m done with a painting, I wait for a couple of days and put a layer of Gamvar, because it’s a specific type of varnish that can be applied as soon as the painting is dry to the touch. And it makes all the colors nice and vivid again just like you see after oiling out. Most other varnishes require you to wait longer for a painting to dry on deeper levels before application, but this is also a great option as long as you’re not in a hurry. I hope this explains it! :)

Hi Daria, I have a few questions regarding the "oiling out" technique. Do you apply the oil before varnishing or after? If you apply it before, should/can you still varnish the painting? Thank you, it was a lovely informative video :)
