The absolutely coolest thing about St. Peter's Square is the Egyptian Obelisk in the center. It was relocated from Egypt to Rome by Emperor Nero as part of the circus (a horse racetrack) that he built. This is the same circus that the real St. Peter was crucified in. The obelisk has pretty not much not moved since, even when the circus was replaced by the Square. Nobody is sure how old it is, but it's possibly the oldest standing structure in Rome, predating the city itself.
