Really? wow that is lucky then because that is exactly what I would have done :( I figured Kohta, who sees himself more as a hero, would've sought to escape first, preferably in as dramatic a situation as possible, and so it probably wouldn't have occurred to him to use it on the guards.

To be fair, he's probably only alive because he didn't shoot it into the hallway. The backpressure of firing a cannon from one enclosed space into another would probably be lethal.
