Ohhhh. I thought the thing that happened in Rayakan was him and Nirka or Nira not the other thing. That makes sense.

Arramos

Kai is simply one of those men who prefers to wake up next to a lover than strangers. The Rayakan orgy mostly just left him feeling heartsick.

Gorutiel is the demon Kai made a deal with. Lilaetiel is the demon that wants to drain ZZN's cultivation. Troulon is the librarian who knew Omi before she went to Deadwaste.

Usernames_are_annoying

Wait, I think I remember that Troulon was the librarian

Usernames_are_annoying

Who’s Gorutiel and Lilaetial and Troulon again?

Usernames_are_annoying

Would have liked to see a little more description of the phase training arc but I’m ok with this. Also correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure Kai had his views before the thing that happened in Rayakan and that actually made him more open?

Inafay has been a wonderful addition to the cast, a wonderful presence in this mini-arc, and I'm glad we'll get more of her in the future. Meanwhile, Rosemount is heating up to be a hell of a stage. So many actors, factors, powers, everything. The fact that the trio has mastered even just half-phases this quickly makes it very likely that they'll each have a full phase by the end of the book. Which begs the question that's been nagging me since phases were properly explained. Are they actually going to take Matiavel down this book? If even just one of them gets a defensive phase, the chance isn't zero. Near zero maybe with the overwhelming power gap remaining, but when has that ever stopped progression fantasy protagonists? Not like Matiavel is hurting for enemies that can weaken him beforehand. They do have personal final bosses seemingly established already, but after the introduction of phases, I just don't see Gorutiel matching Kai even if he improves too, especially Lilaetiel matching ZZN since, unlike her brother, she's still pretty far from the 1000 Power barrier. Kai is reaching a functional 1000 Power now and ZZN has plenty of easy gains remaining. Omi just invented an entirely new Path and still has her burgeoning research, so other than the stronger true demons, I don't see anyone matching her either. Unless Troulon gets supercharged by demonic power, he's not going to meaningfully threaten her anymore. Kai has a weakness against Anaelina, but that's clearly going to be dealt with soon. Then there's the Primal Loom clothing they still have. I'm guessing it provides a qualitative difference rather than a straight increase in power since a +50 from that elven elder's Radiant Mantle seems too low for an Insanity-made artifact. So there's that too. It really feels like the book is setting up a showdown with Matiavel in the end. And yes, we've seen what a 200 Power difference can do with the fight against the Bone Artisan, where it took three people to take him down. But that demon had an entire army, and again, the trio didn't have phases then. One shot from a full power phase and that demon was dead. Hell, even just a half-defense phase alone could've turned the tide, which the trio's resident tank has now. Even if Gorutiel, Lilaetiel, Troulon, or Anaelina somehow get supercharged to have 200 Power above the trio, all of their recent improvements and gains just doesn't seem enough anymore. Like, seriously, what are they gonna do with a full-phase powered hit? Some more miscellaneous thoughts about Deadwaste now that this mini-arc is over. The Prince of Pebbles is definitely going to appear in the future. After the whole deal with Krainuun, I'm treating every half-overt hint of something deeper as clear foreshadowing. The only questions are when he'll appear again and what he'll do. I love that we got an explanation for why Deadwaste still needs all of those 50 to 100 Power hunters if the elites are that powerful. And it was a simpler explanation than I thought. They simply can't be everywhere everywhen. They're very, very strong, but their ranks are also very limited. Even an army of weak monsters that they could annihilate with a single attack could instead annihilate cities on the fringe of the Frontier just because they weren't there to unleash that attack. The elites needs more recruits, but Deadwaste needs more fighters, period. Still, the elites are way stronger than even what I had been anticipating now that I look back at it. They don't have the abundance of energy that the other continents have, but they seem to be an expert in everything else that makes a qualitative difference. They have phases down pat whereas Rosemount and I'm assuming Cloudspire treat them as this mythological, 'god'-like power. They have Hybrid Essences that apparently provide some kind of special technique while also being a hell of a boost in Power, so that's another leg up. And who knows what else they have up their sleeve? If there ever comes a point where Deadwaste's energy void is somehow addressed, the continent is going to immediately be the most powerful force in Detriton just off of the backs of the Frontier elites. I mean, ten casualties? For that entire apocalyptic incursion? TEN? I expected them to lose like, half of their forces from something as insane as that, but that's really fucking impressive. That implies that they don't expect more than a few casualties during normal incursions even in the worst-case scenarios. Of course, on the flip side, I expected them to have a few hundred people, not just one hundred, so they're still hurting for numbers. Still, I feel like their fortunes are about to turn for the better. Gunjin kept talking about the need for better fighters in the current generation. He may yet get them. Back to Rosemount! Here's to hoping Ceryyn doesn't die.

Kenzzs

Ooh! okay

Cognosticon

Yeah, she is playfully referring to "Kais" as a type.

Kris Boxall

No, I can confirm all Kai’s are like this

Kenzzs

"Uh I think that just how kais are". Correction: kai is

Desertopa

I don't think the protagonists are the type to bully him just because they can, no matter how much he might have earned it. Maybe if he's discovered some new asset he might be persuaded to try again, but considering how things turned out last time, it would have to be *some* confidence booster.

Kris Boxall

What does Kai mean when he says he has a half-phases in everything? Just power, defence and speed?

Arramos

Ah, fuck. What are we gonna do without Inafay to carry these doofs? I'm happy that we'll probably see Ceryyn again, but Inafay is a champion and I'm sad to see her depart the story.

Or vidan peled

And so ends the return to dead waste arc, kinda sad we never got to see Fhazi getting the snot beaten out of him again together with the rest of his clan, oh well probably next incursion. Out of context question, how much power would he be having right now?
