So that was their plan, which was basically what the elves asked of them - cut a swath of destruction and chaos through the demonic part of the Commonwealth. We've gotten more alternate POVs with every book and they've always been nice markers of the characters' growth. In this case, I think these stand out because of the trio's bigger plan behind the scenes. POVs like these frame familiar sights behind a limited windowsill, so they mystify the characters we already know very well. The addition of a bigger overarching plan that the POVs aren't privy to enhance that feeling. I think it says a lot about the Commonwealth that the story can efficiently introduce characters simply through their suffering. We've had multiple POVs in one region before, but this is the first one where nearly everyone's life and current situation just sucks lol. Yes, there's that one guard, but he's the exception. A big chunk of the Commonwealth is probably like that slave artisan. What's the scale of the destruction the trio carved? Is it unremarkable in the grand scale of things or is it enough to get a Wikipedia article of notable raids in one of Rosemount's great wars? Given how much they destroyed, I'd like to think so. Multiple forts, garrisons, raided war vaults, etc. And there's the fact that the demons probaby can't replenish their demonic arts users as quickly as the Wilds, Dominion, or Coiled Empire can replenish their soldiers. DA users seem to be stronger on average, but there's less of them so losing even just several is probably a non-trivial blow to the demons' forces. Come to think of it, I think that highlights a weakness with DA despite their rapid growth, other than the obvious lack of cooperation between users. They rely on draining strength from others and basically cannibalize the strength of any significant force. They can drain strength from their enemies, but battles don't just happen left and right and it's a poor strategy to get stronger only during the big battle you're supposed to be preparing for. You simply can't sustain that long-term. That's why there's less of them. Although I suppose that works for Matiavel since he's completely self-interested. Either way, the elves must be really happy with the trio. They've basically been the top operatives deep inside enemy territory, and like Kai mused during the Empress' rescue, they've been killing a lot of Matiavel's forces largely with impunity. Ceryyn deserves all the rewards and promotions for recruiting them. I think she's the type to not care about that stuff, but I do, dammit. Give Lady Sandflower her just flowers! Very excited for the trio to get to the Kama Altar. They're of course going to get stronger, but what I'm really looking forward to is all the latent drama. There's no way they're going to get ideal gains without addressing all the tension between them. They don't know it yet, but all of their feelings are already in the open now that even ZZN knows the thing between Omi and Kai. Either they resolve things here now, even if not entirely, or it'll be a wasted trip.
