I think it was spelled out pretty clearly. They fight each other so often that they can't form larger groups like other races can. That's exactly how modern humans subsumed the neanderthals.

Could be interesting to explain why demons haven't taken control before, or if they have why they failed. Logical conclusion for me is if they are so strong, they woulda taken control way before now.

Man, I really hope Rosemount can live up to these expectations. You'll see a fair amount more of it, but only go deep into a few places. Only so much time in a novel.

God, I really am going to love Rosemount. That part about the Commonwealth's robust systems is a brilliant bit of worldbuilding. I genuinely haven't seen that as an explanation to the longevity of a fictional institution before, but it makes perfect sense given what kind of place Rosemount apparently is. Which, speaking of, the part about nations rising and falling rapidly is another brilliant bit of worldbuilding. Progression fantasy always has to face a specific dilemma eventually and explain why people who have become incredibly powerful don't just take over entire nations if even armies can't defeat them, and how that actually affects the world. I'm almost always disappointed, even in series I've enjoyed a lot. Rosemount has such an elegant solution. Powerful people do indeed take over or found nations, but, and this is the part I really love, those nations are actually more vulnerable than usual. The setting acknowledges that yes, powerful people strong enough to take over or found nations do just that, but the problem with any structure that rests on the strength of just one powerful person, a la dictatorships and monarchies, is that there's a single point of failure. Power can be defeated by power, which naturally leads to the rapid rise and fall of nations as one leader is replaced by the next. Best of all, there's an explanation for why those armies that can't usually defeat them still aren't obsolete! They may be weaker, but they're not a single point of failure. If they can somehow best that one great power, they're a much more stable foundation since even the one that leads them has to answer to an entire army, which is harder to completely control. God, I've been absolutely loving the worldbuilding in Rosemount. And it's only been two chapters since they arrived here! There's so much to learn already. We're probably spending at least two books here, aren't we? Since we spent two on Deadwaste. I know I keep saying this, but I would genuinely not mind spending more time than that. It sounds like there's so much to explore, two books might not be enough lol. Okay, going back to progression lol, there was immediately one question that popped into my head about demons. What's the drawback? Being able to drain the strength of others into themselves sounds very powerful, but the story has been absolutely consistent about drawbacks and tradeoffs to everything. Even Kai's incredibly versatile powers need to be fueled by constantly searching for monsters and throwing himself into more danger than the usual safer training methods of Classes, cultivation, and I suspect chakra as well. Is it the conditions needed to drain the strength? It certainly isn't the limit since Zae Zin Nim said "they can just keep draining." Is it the compatibility of the kind of powers they drain? We certainly saw that dilemma with Anaelina. Is it something else entirely? I'm very curious about the limitations. I still find it funny that they stumbled upon a conflict involving someone equal to one of the great powers of Rosemount on their first day of arriving there. No way the party is going to become the strongest people in Rosemount in one book, so I'm repeating my prediction here that they'll be equal to the elite fighters serving the great powers in this book. For Kai, that's probably Tormundon. Not sure about ZZN and Omilaena. I considered Anaelina for the latter, but Omilaena seems beyond her already. For now, I'll say she'll be fighting ZZN in the final battle for this book. Maybe Omilaena fights that demon they came across in the Commonwealth? I'm very excited to see how Kai and ZZN start using chakra. We already know it runs on more abstract concepts like intent and emotions, but what does that look like in practice? I can see ZZN being able to synergize her future chakra powers with her qi-mana fused abilities, but I don't know how to picture it working with Kai. I'm sure it will, it's just that the extent I can imagine for it is his Physique. Soul Level, which is his other human parameter, clearly operates under a different mechanism. Omilaena will just Omilaena. She says as much lol. Thanks for the chapter!
