A monster hunt so early? Oh, Kai spoils me so. I'm so glad he ate those people and brought enough trouble on himself that he has to live in the jungle. (This is a joke, I'm not glad he ate people.) The origin of Kai's monstrous powers has always bothered me. I think it's pretty clear that he didn't gain them from a single event. It'd be pretty obvious if he did and he'd have figured out what it was a long time ago. It can't have been him removing the Laborer Class from his soul 'cause I highly doubt he's the first person in history to do that to himself or have had that happen to them. Hell, now that we know of demons, a soul being drained of all its powers must be a relatively common occurence. We'd have seen at least a few monstrous warriors in history already if it was just that, and Kai certainly seems like an extremely strange, singular case since even someone like the gray man at the abyss was shocked at his soul. Even if it had to be a Class that was removed, and even if it had to be voluntary, which are both very arbitrary conditions, I still don't believe Kai is the first person to meet them. Some deranged and/or overly curious researcher would've tried forcibly removing their Class from their soul just to see what happens at least once in Deadwaste's history, and I absolutely believe someone would've experimented on others already. Rather, I vaguely remember Cognosticon saying that he got his powers not from a single event, but from a specific series that eventually awakened them. And yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Kai may not be the first person to have their Class or other power system(s) removed from their soul, but he certainly seems like the first one to stumble into a bunch of incredibly improbable experiences, any combination of which could've triggered something. There's the obvious triple failure to gather powers before he got exiled from Monskon City, any one of which is strange enough that they could've triggered something, like the Path of Steel being removed from his soul. There's the strange circumstances and methods that he fought some key monsters in - he was practically eating the Direboar with how much he was exposed to it, and he DID eat through the Aquagorgon to make his way outside its mouth, which is pretty ironic now that I think about it. He was also drained by what we now know to be a demon, and some other strange experiences I'm probably forgetting or not realizing. He's gone through some insane shit. But it surely can't be all of them since that'd just be absurd, and I'm not smart enough to figure out what specific ones indeed affected something and what conditions they triggered to have led to something as utterly antithetical to power as Monstrous Hunger awakening inside Kai that fateful night. But there's a wrinkle to that. As early as chapter 3 or somewhere around there, Kai was momentarily overwhelmed by some rage-filled haze when he was fighting a boar, and looking back, it was suspiciously similar to the fits of Hunger he experiences at present day. Not only that, after his battle with the Direboar, he was weirdly resistant to poisons. From a monster. Assuming these aren't red herrings and are connected to his monstrous powers, why did they happen so early on? Even assuming it isn't that, we've seen him become taken over by that same rage-filled haze during the battles with the Aquagorgon and the Isulfr. The former may have involved an overdrive pill, but it was still reaching for something already inside him at that point. All of this was months before he awakened any monstrous power. I don't think he was born with them, and I would personally hate for that to be the explanation, but there's clearly something strange with Kai's soul even from the beginning of the story. We still have no idea why he's so incompatible with conventional powers. Is it really just luck? Two times I can understand, but three times is stretching believability. And so far as I can tell from subsequent rereads, that rage-filled haze has never been explained either. I still think the reason is a series of events that only became complete with Anaelina draining his Class and him finishing the job, but all of these prior experiences throw me for a loop. It really is a puzzle and a half. Going back to the present, I wonder if he can gain the essence of monstrous plants? Are there even monstrous plants? Logic would dictate so since nearly every monster we've seen has been a twisted version of existing creatures, but I think this is actually the first one we've encountered. It'd be interesting what ability he can gain from it if it's possible. I do hope he gets something powerful from the jungle, but I also hope he can eat enough monsters that he'll have a legion of weaker abilities to experiment with. It's been a while since the last time he can just mess about with his monstrous powers and see what happens. And I'm very excited for the next fusion involving as many abilities and as delicately balanced as the one that gave him Behemoth's Heart. I hope we can get something like that before things start going really wrong, because of course they will lol. Thanks for the chapter!

You'll find out more details (much) later as the characters learn more about the fundamentals underlying other systems, but I want to state now that there isn't going to be any reveal that Kai was a monster all along. Kai gained his power via a combination of honest bad luck (the elemental system), experience (monster innards), and bloody-minded determination even when his soul was so damaged. Not that I think you were proposing this, just stating for the record.

I originally thought that Kai's complete lack of affinity for the human methods of gathering power was the result of having a monstrous soul, but Kai makes a good point that if that were true he'd likely have been euthanized as a child. So where did it come from? All the way back as far as the Goralian trials where the story began, Kai displayed both a furious red combat haze and resistance to the poisonous monster blood. The only thing I can think of is that it's partly the result of being drenched in the innards of a direboar, isulfur, and aquagorgon, and the unusual "shape" of Kai's soul left an opening for monster essence to settle in.
