I don't know how Cognosticon is going to address it but I think the best solution would be that Soul Cultivation reveals character, preferably at relatively low levels. So that a soul cultivator who seeks the power to dominate and control others will not receive as pleasant a glamor but would get something much darker. If even those who are vulnerable to the corrupting effects of their apparent superiority show up early enough then Elven society can police itself by denying resources to those it deems unfit for greater power. That also sets up a possible classic Light/Dark elf split where a dark elfs are Soul Cultivators driven from Light elf society for seeking power and control.

I love glamour in stories. The King Walks Unseen.

AnythingAtAll

Okay, this chapter did not comfort me about soul cultivation AT ALL. Overwhelming power is one thing, but this is like, literal mind control. I was so creeped out when the elves started kneeling. It sounds perfect for Kai's monstrous soul, but a part of me also wants him to stay VERY far away from it. And Ceryyn isn't even that good? That's probably her being overly modest, but still. What on earth can the elders do if this is how much she affects people that'd be some of the strongest people in Deadwaste? Can they basically create armies of elves willing to do anything they want with just a snap? They'd be able to turn anyone beneath them into a slave. Elven society genuinely sounds like an eldritch entity. Is Glamour the only type of elven soul cultivation? Are there others that don't focus on having an eldritch aura of beauty? I'm trying to imagine Kai the Barbarian having a Glamour-type soul and I'm just left chuckling. What, does his excessive body hair become silky threads of roguish glamour? The real kicker is that Ceryyn seems like a lot of fun! She's bubbly and cheerful without being saccharine, and she clearly knows far, far more than she's letting on, even after she revealed herself, which is intriguing and fun and I want to know more about her. She sounds like a great addition to the cast, even if not the main one. But god, her soul creeps me out. I mean, genuinely, how do you build a just society, even theoretically, from soul cultivation as we know it right now? You can check power with power. It's the foundation of stable governments and the like. Hell, for as repugnant as Krysal's society was, the workers still managed to take back power by fighting for it. But how do you keep THIS in check? How on earth do you even fight it? Not everyone can be as freakishly strong-willed as Kai. I know I for one would absolutely be brainwashed the moment I'm in the presence of an 800 Power soul cultivator. Are there even such a thing as elven revolutions? How do you fight something that can manipulate your very soul? For the first time in this series, I'm not excited to learn more about something. Well no, I am, I'm very intrigued - but I'm also dreading what answers we'll get. And we haven't even gotten to the demons yet!
