I really loved this fight. I've already mentioned that the grueling and gradual battles are what drew me into the series, but this chapter also highlighted how exciting they can be because the beats come so rapidly. One minute, Kai is impaled and can't fight back; then Omilaena managed to free him; then they're beset by constructs on all sides; except no, Baleful Breath has that covered; but the weakness of Baleful Breath, that it's indiscriminate in its destruction, is also what made the final melee difficult for everyone in the trio, then finally, the poison gambit that eked out the hard-fought win. Everything was shifting quickly and it was very fun to read. This won't apply to every fight, of course. For example, the Aquagorgon from book 1 was a desperate fight for survival all throughout, without substantial shifts in its beats except for Kai tearing it apart from the inside out and finally ending the fight. But I think the fight with the Bone Artisan goes to show that even when the protagonists are on equal footing with their enemies, there's still a lot of tension to be mined. I want to think Ceryyn wouldn't betray them, not when she's an interesting character I want to see more of, and given that Omilaena eventually became an ally, I should be confident in the odds. However, it's different this time, 'cause this is Rosemount, where even Omilaena's a fish out of water after being away for so long, and they've landed smack dab in the middle of an unfamiliar conflict. Not a city-wide one like with Monskon City and Rayakan, nor even country-wide like with Krysal, but one that potentially spans the entire continent. Moreover, as much as I want to trust Ceryyn, I'll exercise caution this time. I don't think she would've completely betrayed them, but she'll obviously have her own goals. It might not even be her choice, and it's just what the elven elders told her to do. That or this is really just a normal rendezvous point and one of the elves' bases is nearby lol.
