I wish that would have been clearer. It seemed like it had some kind of supernatural hold on them. XD Now I see it was a psychological thing. They were blinded by their drive.

The portrait was never important though i can see why one would think that. Helios and Spectra were simply blinded by their shared desire for power and to be the best, when Spectra defeated Gus in the Arena all he respected was strength, hence the "you see it too" thing.
