Dynasty Andrews

Jackie Aina (now Jackie Asamoah) made a video about how she no longer feels comfortable with her audience calling her "auntie" and to put it short (kind of lol) it has to do with the fact that she’s the eldest daughter + the child of an immigrant so she’s felt a lot of pressure to be perfect growing up. She’s said that people online calling her auntie only add to that.

Oniondip

That's what I thought as well

Nyesha C.

As a Millennial, I wouldn't be offended if someone called me Aunty, I kind of feel like, you don't know me well enough to call me that 🤣. But I wouldn't be offended. I think its the younger Millennials/older gen z that are probably mad about 🤷🏾‍♀️

Natalie W

that whole conversation about those black girls first day of school…. yeah that was definitely auntie behavior because why are you talking about a child?? you’re coming up on a 10 year anniversary of graduating

Evette

Ooooo we so in cause I bought hella stuff on Gap’s Black Friday 🤭 I fr love the GAP

Michelle

Idk the context of this auntie convo. I don’t be online like that. But I thought the whole auntie thing came from African culture. I hear them call elders auntie, even the ones they don’t know or aren’t related to. I learned that mostly from tv and books.

Lilac S.

I was JUST about to comment this. I see more men irl being called "Unc" jokingly than women being called Auntie tbh.

Jules

Thank you Kenya so much for letting us know where you get your sweaters. That has been my number one question for the past few days. They look so cute and comfy!

Dani

I’m Jamaican (American) and I call my mom’s friends Auntie and Uncles all the time. Yes I do have actual uncles but in Jamaican/Caribbean culture, it’s a thing. They see it as a sign of respect. So it may be a cultural thing. Then again, my actual nieces don’t call me auntie. They just call me by my name lol 😆 we’re all close in age though!

aliya

completely agree w the kid actor take! some kids really have a passion for this and shouldn’t be punished bc the adults around them are sick. it’s them that need to be regulated not the kiddos🤷🏽‍♀️ plus there’s a way to have your kid in hollywood and still protect them🤫

taylor

I totally agree on the relationship context being missing from the conversation, i’m 28 and my close friend’s daughter who i’ve known and been a part of her whole life calls me auntie and i feel honored bc its a signifier of connection and impact!

Precious4U

Because most of us descend from Africa/the Caribbean (being at most 4th gen immigrants) and you can't call an older person by their name unless they give you permission. By default, you call them Mr/Mrs or Auntie/Uncle. I have literally had my parents' family friends demand I call them Auntie/Uncle.

jewel

no cause they're the same people who damn near have a panic attack trying to make a phone call cause they don't go outside 💀

M.rachelle

Im 30. Neither I nor anybody I’ve encountered have ever called anyone auntie that wasn’t their auntie. I feel like it’s an online thing.

Cosmic Orbit

Thats what I wanted to say. Kiara is literally Simba and Nala’s daughter and important to the story being that she is being told the story of her grandfather Mufasa in the movie.

Kenya Moore

wait but can we stop saying that Kiara isn’t a real role? lol that was an actual character in lion king 2 😭

Nyongbella

i think the aunty thing is for sure an age insecurity. I don't think it's so weird if it's coming from someone significantly younger like a teen saying it to someone 25+, but online where most assume they're interacting with their peers, it might be weird to have someone who's 27 calling you aunty and you're say 30.

Tyy Li

terms are being used veryyyyy loosely nowadays

Bria Hall

I feel the same way. As an actual auntie and millennial,I don't care either. Maybe it's because I've been told my whole life by adults that I have an old soul.

Cosmic Brownie

you dont give auntie vibes as a gen z member

Danielle A

That’s the thing too if someone’s really bothering you cuss them out you don’t have to sit up online and cry about them all the time stand up for yourself if you’re really that bothered

Danielle A

Gap shit looks soooo good ugh

Danielle A

And really - Blue Ivy sounds GOOD she sounds like freaking Simba in the og

Danielle A

I was listening to your group trips podcast for the nth time and I still had a blast hahshsh

Rainy Feathers

We address elders we don't know/know as aunty/uncle or 'mum' (the guys dont get 'dad' because... it ain't that). It's a thing in the UK.

tay w

also definitely agree that the auntie discourse is an online thing, i’ve seen people called unc irl but never auntie unless they’re an aunt

tay w

kiara does exist in the lion king 2 🫶🏾 however i don’t think the new movie is just the lion king 2 live action so i understand if your point is like she wouldn’t be in this specific movie except to give blue ivy a job

Dejanais White

I will say I have been called an auntie and I’m 26 years old. Now I grew up around my grandmomma and I use a lot of her sayings so I think that’s where it comes from for me 😂 I personally don’t mind it but I can understand why people may not like it.

Vic

Now Kenya...you don't see yourself as auntie online but last month you was telling DVD to take advice from an old lady 😭🤣

India Barrow

Im 24 with a 18 year old nephew. 30 year olds think ima baby and teenagers think I give mama. Who gives a fawk, im my age regardless. I don’t get the obsession with not wanting to get old.

KRYSTAL

It def just a social media thing

Taylor Haynes

See on both sides like Chanel 😭😭

KRYSTAL

I def think Jackie wanted them to stop calling her that cause of para social relationships and them putting her on a pedestal

titi

twitter is always a bit funny to me because cant y'all just ask the individual or individuals to stop calling you auntie??

Imani Branch

I consider myself young still. I’ve never called anyone auntie that wasn’t my actual Aunt, not even in a derogatory way, unless that person gave themselves that moniker (like Jackie Aina). She did recently come out and say that she doesn’t like being called that any more, which is totally fine, so I stopped. Bottom line is, eggs are $4.

Shea Shola

The auntie thing is also cultural. In my culture if someone is older than you then you call then Auntie. Almost like sir, ms, mrs

Alexis

I feel like arts schools are perfect for this. At least in my personal experience. There was the fear of being kicked out because we had to have an evaluation twice a year. If you fail two you get kicked out of your major. But also like … if it ain’t there it ain’t there

Alexis

I went to an arts school since I was 9. Why would I want to watch adults when I’m 9? I feel like as a kid I genuinely enjoyed it. Especially when we did some film stuff. But also I wasn’t being worked to death or creeped on my adults so idk

Jessica Davis

The gap outlet loves me

zipporah

and sometimes it can be used in a disparaging way when discussing how aunties can be (judgemental mean etc) but also a sign of respect

zipporah

haven’t finished video yet but it is definitely a thing to call older women auntie particularly in west african culture idk about other places though

Ashley Woods

This where I think the internet is so unserious 😂 If someone doesn’t want to be called a name/auntie …. then don’t do it. Simple.

Jelissa

She did the audio for Hair love???? My baby lovesssss that book!
