Thomas Hoffboll

i wounder, would earth still be in the astroid mining stage or is the first starlifter online?

Ferr

When you go back to chapter 1 and read what makes the Vunerians more then a kobolt, you know this is goning to be good.

Remi

Honestly the whole mining gas giants for hydrogen is pretty overrated imo. The economics of engineering a ship to withstand atmospheric pressures and be able to pull itself out of the large gravity well dont work in its favour. Neither does the effort of engineering tanks to be able to withstand high pressure gas or be cryogenic. Much easier to move from one oort cloud object to next, mining ice, then bringing it stationside to be processed

Spencer

Bitconeeeeeeeeect

Michael Halpern

not talking about inn space use.

David

Gold hollow point shells for ship to ship combat... at that point my not Mercury? Liquids could do some funny things in space ?

Kyle Hall

I'm curious if it will, because as far as I know Emma has only discussed things being on a large or observable scale, but if she reveals that they have worked on a scale so small human eyes couldn't possibly see it, then it brings everything into question again on how advanced Earthrealm is. If Thacea, Thalmin, and Illunor all learn about Earthrealm's atomic knowledge, and how they used it, it will throw open the doors again of what humanity is theoretically capable of. Remember, they use magic, they not fully understand the innerworkings of a computer chip.

Delsin Hays

Honestly I am gonna enjoy the next conversation regarding this

chromiumdragon

At the spending money level, my vote would be animated, programmable stickers. Lightweight, disposable, and no major uses. But a huge novelty, even in a magic infused society, since they are clearly able to operate without any mana. While to most of the nobility they would likely treat them as curiosities, I imagine any with a mercantile outlook could sell them to wealthy commoners who might have the magic ability to use their equivalent.

Michael Halpern

probably better to save that for the Library, that's more science/technical than cultural

Michael Halpern

Not gold, but MONEY, more generally wealth and symbols of wealth. consider his shock at Earthrealm casual attire

Vortex

so gold to Vunerians is like catnip to cats, got it xD

Michael Halpern

options for trade goods: dye, i would highly recommend the yellow dye based on toluene, it has additional uses once she has some ready made...

Potion

before we left today did we? -> before we left today, did it?

Michael Halpern

Either a solar calculator or a Curta, curtas might be better because they are purely mechanical

Brandon N.

My bet's on it being either technology or engineered materials, stuff that's too low on the tech tree to make much of a difference in a shooting war. A big one being the Haber process for synthetic ammonia, at this point in time regular chemical explosives wouldn't do much to damage to GUN forces but would be valuable enough to buy a crownland estate because of it's ability to feed trillions across the adjacent realms without relying on magic.

Michael Halpern

because we control how much is in circulation, thereby creating the limited supply to derive value

Michael Halpern

they have 2 forms of currency, requisition units for basic needs (which are provided) and universal transaction units, for anything beyond basic needs you have to work for, but that just gives you a reason to work towards something

Michael Halpern

artificial elements are unstable, giving people radiation poisoning is generally frowned upon diplomatically

Steve Desamos

It was mentioned earlier something about the Universal Guaranteed Income or whatever

Steve Desamos

I don’t think you truly understand how big even 8bil is, but yeah. It feels a little low for a spacefaring civilization that has settled at the very least their entire solar system and is working on the next closest few. That said, 250bil only in the home solar system actually is decent enough of an estimate to make sense

Steve Desamos

Because we said so

Steve Desamos

That’s a good one. I was thinking maybe barbed but underhanded works better

Alexander Leith

Which I'm hoping means they've moved past the need for a monetary system. Like Star Trek

@Alphamoonman

Wouldn't magic do the same thing?

@Alphamoonman

He DOES come from a place of dragons. I would imagine, considering every single common fantasy trope (such as the aforementioned in chapter "lead into gold" trope also being considered a trope to Ilunor) actually ends up being an accurate guess as to how things really do work.

@Alphamoonman

Hey, good catch!

@Alphamoonman

I bet she's gonna be like. "Out there in the void where you die without air, there's big ugly rocks-" "Why would we care about big ugly rocks?" Asked dumb kobold "Because any natural element you can think of is inside them, in amounts as large as a city." Shock.exe "What do you mean natural?" Asked wolf dude EvilHandRubbing.exe "Heheheh~" said the super smart commoner

@Alphamoonman

I imagine at least one corpo made a city out of gold just because they could

@Alphamoonman

I think that's a small number considering how much time has passed from now to the canon's current day especially with how futuristic and expansive they seem to have become. Not to mention how they seemed to run their steps wholly through a corporatocracy-dominating societal phase, which the MO of all corporations is market domination, hyper expansion, cutthroat competition, and new higher goals every quarter. To only be 250B after, like, multiple hundreds of years, would seem.... disappointing, or point to some post-extinction-level event they just got done working through. Like the end of an era.

Willow Arkan

That would be a very funny reason for why dragon horde gold, silber and gems, because they are effectively dragon exfoliant.

@Alphamoonman

Underhanded remark, perhaps?

Willow Arkan

I mean this is in a story about inter-dimensional travel to a magic school, by way of rare magic elements, pretty sure one can stretch physics to accommodate artificial large scale nuclear synthesis, which at least is currently doable if wildly energetically inefficient.

@Alphamoonman

Artificial elements, especially ones that aren't simply made in the depths (or outer reaches) of any size star.

@Alphamoonman

Oh my, will Ilunor, or perhaps the trio in totality, be receiving a lesson in the fundamental elements? Not water, earth, fire, etc... but the atomic elements, and how the "transmutation" of anything is merely moving some neutrons and protons around~ Or how about the mastery of matter at the quantum level to create new impossible elements with fresh new properties? Or super elements such as the infamous ice-XX? (Think it's ice-16)

Tazeell

I love this little downtime chapter. Bit of banter and fun! The gold pile was also a funny bit.

Michael Halpern

they probably are mining gas giants for hydrogen, and various rocks that have collected stellar winds for he3. water is more useful as water, or in industrial processes, they can use the hydrogen in water for that, but generally there's better ways to store hydrogen, such as polyethylene.

Bbobsillypants

"Awh, can your society turn lead into gold. Thats cute. Mine can turn Water into the Sun."

Michael Halpern

probably less than water, water is useful in far greater quantities, gold you just need for electrical contacts in oxygenated environments and a few other things, maybe in a couple alloys. Copper is more conductive, as is silver, gold is soft and dense, in a post scarcity society, the value of any basic material has much more to do with the demand than the supply, advanced materials have the labor involved in production to consider.

Michael Halpern

gems might be a bit more valuable, depending on their uses.

Michael Halpern

well the gold will still be useful for pen nibs and some electronics. probably also for the rail gun. (dense though soft projectile, good for when you don't want to penetrate a target)

Michael Halpern

Nuclear transmutation is a thing, that's how we make unstable elements, technically its how everything that isn't hydrogen or helium was made, and likely how they stretch fusion fuel supplies -lithium blanket gets bombarded with neutrons to produce deuterium and/or tritium (i forget which) which is then fed back into the reactor. but for any stable element that isn't a specific isotope, it will usually be cheaper just to find a rock in space and mine it,

Michael Halpern

she's from a post scarcity society

Brachy LP

Illunor is being Adroable in going into what is essentially baby Dragon's First Horde Mode, Rolling in Gold as a Pasttime has been done in Many Draconic Races and you having Thrown hints of this and His Draconic Heritage is paying Dividends now. Amazing Chapter even if not Much other Than Banter is on. Still after the Explosion of Happenings that were The Whole PE Chapter and the Heist Planning after just getting Some Breathing Room was nice. I do wonder what the Library Did to Illunor. Did they cast a Slow Transmutation spell that will Discolor him from his Royal Bloodline Blue to Green so he Looks like a Commoner of his Realm? Or Drain his Magic Abilities if he dosen't Return on time? So many things he could be ashamed about... Anyways Great Chapter, Love to see what comes Next.

Nul Atlas

I imagine that may happen somewhere in the future, I'm hoping sooner rather then later.

Michael Halpern

ballpoint pens. impossible to produce without insane precision manufacturing, obvious use

Bbobsillypants

Biomass is legit way more rare cosmilogically than literally any other material.

Brandon N.

One thing I did realize is that probably means that the precious metals/gems that they gave Emma is essentially worthless. I wonder if they planned contingencies for this and gave her other things that might be valuable for trade What do guys think it is?

Alexander Leith

Quick! To the holo-dome!

Michael Halpern

its possible, just not practical for producing anything that exists in nature

Christian White

To be honest, I'd be disappointed if, 1000 years in the future, mass transmutation of gold wasn't possible.

Steve Desamos

I feel like “backhanded compliment” was a phrase used multiple times in a very short time. There’s not a lot of synonyms, but it could deserve a second look

Bbobsillypants

Tune in next episode where emma herin discuses the wonders of crypto currency and nfts! Allso yeh emas realm is implied to be stripping planetoids at least on a semi regular basis, combine that with mass scale asteroid mining making certain rare metals as easy to aquire as lead, and you got a economy that values gold barely more than water.

DizziLIzzard

I think it was stated to be a bit over 250 billion

Michael Halpern

No it derives its value from itself,

Pyrion

I imagine he's probably shedding his scales and so needs something both in large quantity and necessarily abrasive to help strip them off.

Willow Arkan

Do people not still place a high value on small quantities of gold? Just because currencies are no longer backed in gold, doesn't mean it doesn't still maintain a high value. Furthermore are large quantities of gold not still hoarded, as if by a dragon, by individuals, legal entities and governments, including those who issue fiat currencies, for no other reason as the value ascribed to it?

Michael Halpern

dirt is pretty valuable, you can grow stuff in it

UC-79

Good thing humanity is united in this story lol "if your currency is not backed by gold, then what in his eternal majesty's name does it derive value from?" "Intercontinental ballistic missiles, mostly."

UC-79

"Have you considered, even for a second, how much this suit alone cost to construct?" Also can't wait for the next holoprojector trip, or for thalmin/thacea to ask what emma looks like under the armor.

Wumpy

The gang still has no idea about the scale humans operate at. I can't wait for the question to finaly arise. "Emma, how many humans are there?" "Oh, you know, couple trilion / couple hundred bilion / another equaly bonkers number." Now go and try to invade that!

Max Kreuzer

It starts way earlier. Take for example ðe pieces of paper in your wallet.

LumiOak

Idk, I think this just dips in to the lore of dragons hoarding gold/sleeping on it

Michael Halpern

Oh great this means the Nexus probably has E=MC² weapons

Gustav Frstn

On the next episode: llunor finds out about Bitcoin.

Michael Halpern

Ahh so they are going to talk about flight now...

Zaxus Lanterus

I think "scarcity" is the wrong word in this case.

Sanyesza900

Gold worth kinda becomes irrelevant after you are able to mine multiple planets made out of gold

Willow Arkan

I figure it might be a draconic instinct, like a cat's urge for elevated or tight spaces, or maybe more akin to the effect of catnip.

Willow Arkan

I am assuming this might be in reference to asteroid mining flooding the system with gold and not large scale nuclear synthesis of gold, though the latter would be fun.

SpaceFan839

It probably won't be manaless transmutation, space mining is much more cost effective. Humanity has space elevators and FTL, it would be very difficult to not find large deposits of everything in enough quantities to make most rare materials less valuable than dirt.

Brandon N.

Looks like the gang is gonna get another round of show and tell from Emma next chapter. I wonder how she's gonna broach the subject of space flight to them.

ArdenW

Emma about to go through a primer on Earth's economic system and the decoupling from the gold standard.

Cosmic BGM

I kinda wish it's just a simple we found how to do manaless transmutation... By rearranging the atom. Prompting everyone to ask what's an atom. Leading to a basic chemistry lesson. But hopefully not a full chapter. I appreciate the work put in but for everything Earthrealm does to need a full chapter or even half, slows down the story... We are almost at ch 100 and no house sorting ceremony yet. Again not hate just, a brief explanation can tell more than Emma giving a full explanation. Love the series just pacing could be improved.

Canpinter

Emma please please explain UBI to llunor, I want to see if his head explodes.

zmessing11

They're about to have another "immaterial worries that arise out of complexity" moment aren't they?

Gamerdestiny6

Ilunor trying to copy the fabled Scrooge McDuck, he's gonna need a bigger bin to even try properly.

Pierre Florendo

Ilunor having a Scrooge McDuck moment?

TheArchivist

UNINTENTIONAL ILUNOR BONDING MOMENT
