Anton

Technically, she specifically didn't bring it up.

Brandon N.

My bet's on hybrid fission fusion, instead of self sustained fission a suped up fusor* would generate the necessary neutrons to drive fission allowing for massive space savings as they're mechanically simple. It would basically be a neutron emitting blue glowing lightbulb wrapped in a uranium/thorium blanket emitting enough heat to boil water. *Fusors are a pretty interesting little invention made by the same guy who invented the TV. It successfully achieves fusion by electrically accelerating hydrogen towards the center of a spherical space thus generating neutrons but is too inefficient to generate net energy. Making useful only as a neutron source.

Michael Halpern

Earth has UBI plus other transaction currency, basically backing the value of the currency off of labor directly that only works because they are post scarcity

Michael Halpern

"compact" problem with fusion is minimum mass for a self sustaining chain reaction is quite a lot

Anton

I mean, it doesn't sound like Earth really deals with ForEx either anymore, since it's just one government now (and Switzerland, I guess).

Anton

I mean, we are talking about sci-fi level tech here. An efficient (and low maintenance) internal RTG with something like kinetic recharging could conceivably run the suit computer systems, along with fuel cells re-charged by an external generator for the pneumatics and other high power application s. I could see fusion, but we are also already experimenting with compact fission generators now, so could be either.

Michael Halpern

an RTG wouldn't generate nearly enough power, antimatter is not a generator, its a storage medium, (you don't get enough energy out to replace the antimatter) also takes up too much space. Fission also takes up a lot of space, so her suit probably runs on fusion,

Anton

Thats what I've been wondering for a minute now. How do you explain nuclear fusion, nuclear fission, or matter-antimatter annihilation without a deep understanding of atomic theory? Especially when one of those three (or more likely, a radioisotope thermoelectric generator) is probably the power source for her suit.

Michael Halpern

Space, the final frontier.. or at least that's what it was until we figured out interrealm portals

lukas0797

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. Now she's finally brought it up. Space. Even space mining. I hope it won't be too long before she finally shows them how humanity has overcome the limits of their world. And imagining the Vunerian being so overwhelmed that he simply faints was hilarious.

Michael Halpern

well Thacea did let slip that only Most metals can be created through Pinnacle transmutation,

Oniklo

Makes me wonder, just what is the Nexian understanding of atomic theory? Do they actually understand what happens when they transmute metals, or are they more like illiterate medieval monk copying manuscripts.

Michael Halpern

The real flex is the bar of neodymium, or bar segments making up a selection of REEs including neodymium, the Nexus may not know what it even IS

Michael Halpern

im looking forward to his reaction to a MANPADS

Bbobsillypants

Illunors character is slowly evolving into adorable little gremlin.

Michael Halpern

yes but then it wouldn't be as plausible as not being intended

Ragnar Pendon

Ah... but engineering monkeys tho... if can be done, it WILL be done XD

Michael Halpern

harder to do that on a pure mechanical system

Michael Halpern

to insulate adjacent realms, and the Nexus from economic disruption. and to make sure each realm has enough currency within domestic circulation to function without needing to over produce the trade currency, also deals with issues like horders and people going on spending sprees causing inflation and deflation unpredictably. not every country in the EU has had a painless transition to the Euro for instance (Greece for example).

Michael Halpern

that alone doesn't account for the abundance, after all the skyscraper needs materials too. Thacea probably will be the first to figure it out, after all she saw Earthring 2, and really there are 2 main sources of platinum, volcanos, and space rocks, volcanos because sometimes platinum group metals that sank during planetary formation are brought to the surface, where they can be accessed, space rocks either through impacts or (by Emma's time) going to them would be where the rest comes from.

adam g

One thought, the gang saw the robots digging to bedrock for a massive skyscraper during the city simulation. It would be responsible for them to connect the dots and realize those digging bots could also sort out metals from the ground.

SoylentPudding

Why would there be ForEx currency when there is only the Nexus, it's vassals, and adjacent realms that don't yet know they're future vassals?

Willow Arkan

He needs to watch some anime, I feel he'd enjoy that. Show him gundams.

Michael Halpern

it's also clear that the Nexus and adjacent realms don't have a concept of ForEx currency vs Domestic currency, which I think Emma was originally trying to get at. This is not a good sign for the economic health of adjacent realms. Domestic Currency keeps "global" inflation rates from putting basic needs beyond the purchasing power of poorer regions, it also serves as a line of defense against economic disruption outside your borders, you'll still feel it as the price of imported goods and revenue from exports will change significantly, but your domestic commerce will be less affected. this tells me that a lot of domestic trade is likely done through barter.

Mr von Twistern

The ~☆WEALTH CUBE☆~

Ragnar Pendon

Ilunor chachinging for a whole minute, IAS should've changed the sfx to a 1up if he kept at it

Michael Halpern

the dragon has killed innocents, even if its sapient, given recapture is impractical, Emma only has one option,

David

I still want to see a diplomatic victory with the dragon after the military option is "as the dragon considers it" a stale mate, and an amenable alternative.

David

Blue Bear summer my dude, the deluxe Kobold truly knows how to relax and watch the "commoners" ~~labor~~ run a physical education track.

David

Please this is "mining other realms". This is a "Zero Point Module" power source of Stargate, ala resources of the nexus. Something these silly politically inundated wizards could only dream of; but are too shackled but the idea of exploitation of the masses to consider their election, equalisation through education, and the mass innovation that could drive. Mana dependant or otherwise.

David

So about 90+ % of the population. Assuming higher education becomes more common in this universe masters+ , just like a bachelor's did between 1920 and 2020. I could seen some wild times ahead 😜

David

That would be far too easy,I am hoping the dragon asks for a trade. Fetch a part of its self (possibly "contents of a chest", a clutch of eggs, a skull of a past mate, or a scale of a past mate/it's self ) from the school in exchange for the scale of the needed mana attunement, quality etc. a fetch/theft quest focused at the academy to cement Emma, in the dragon's eyes as "trustworthy enough" as a power that is not aligned with the school. And possibly having the library act as an intermediary for communication after the initial contact, subduel, quest, fetch, and successful completion. But the library already knowing the dragon and having a means of reaching out and a "working relationship" would be hilarious and wild. I'll stop shit posting now as JCB has enough material 😉

Michael Halpern

well it did take some of them a bit to figure out how fairly the points divided up from the enhanced trials

Michael Halpern

na DU is plenty useful, and in case of wmd needed it should come from Earth,

ghost01173430

Maybe the regular uranium ingots are stored in another container or maybe Emma has a device that can somehow restore the depleted uranium into regular kaboom uranium?

Michael Halpern

sure but if they want to open a portal somewhere else they need a stored media to at least get it going

Michael Halpern

Nah endless armies of S-AMCPs and securing alliances, proving the lies of "impossibility" thus breaking Status Eternia and throwing Nexian legitimacy into question. possibly finding out if they deployed a bioweapon onto Ping's realm before "saving them"

Ragnar Pendon

@ghost01173430 ah yes.. the giant robot and space race combo

Michael Halpern

Depleted Uranium i bet, you wouldn't want to cause galvanic reactions between the various metals by providing a heat and ion source

ghost01173430

Earth can try the good old strategy of masking the science victory with a military victory like in Civilization.

Allen Mainville

Dude’s gonna want to trade in his sword for a gun. Or maybe wish for a gun blade.

Allen Mainville

Sounds like Thacea should, to quote a certain Grey Warden, “master her taint.”

ghost01173430

Wait, I wonder if the cube has uranium in it and what would the implications be of the metal being known by the Nexus and their apparent lack of use for deadliest metal known to humanity

Michael Halpern

My theory regarding Taint is that is just unlocks more powerful magic, and may be necessary for portals, it doesn't seem to affect Humans however, therefore the negative affects of taint, beyond the discomfort to the magic user are likely either pure propaganda or exaggerated, as a means of preventing more powerful magic users outside of crown control from becoming common. "Consumption" really being cover for defenestration. It's just too convenient to not be Nexus grade Bull shitting.

Legijas

It’s not like we haven’t already seen WMDs in the history class

Michael Halpern

GUN may not have a choice but to go to war, remember the "last confrontation" proffacy Ilunor told Thalmin about, When the nexus burns through their non aggressive options to get Earthrealm to bend a knee, (3 of which have already been defeated, soul binding the representative, targeted plague (via the creation of a duplicate) and economic warfare, The Nexus will resort to war, if they see Earth is near parity they will send a premtive strike, thereby making the proffacy seld fulfilling.

Bbobsillypants

They dont need to extract mana from the coins, if they need mana just open a small portal to the nexus and utilize the bleed mana. Like they did to revitalize their half of the shard of impart.

Cariuss Shadow

If it really escalated to total war a grey goo situation seems within the UNs capabilities. But I doubt they'll do that and really just try to avoid war, just incite a little rebellions maybe.

Michael Halpern

The problem is that there's no orbiting the Nexus if the lore of it is in fact true about it being an infinite plane, even if its really just a bunch of giant ass portals linking planets together then you would only be able to orbit part of the Nexus,

I Dare Korval

I mentioned in those earlier chapters that since taint seems able to immediately shut down the magic producing parts of all thier cells and can cause even them to liquidate/harmonize, the Nexus may have figured out the process for that and can just use a taint nuke to strip everyone of thier magic and let them melt away. This might also suggest that if Thacea learned to control her taint instead of just suppress it, she would be a very deadly threat to anyone who has magic.

Michael Halpern

probably will, before they all turn in. he did ask about the various flying machines last time

I Dare Korval

Just go to the Nexus (in orbit) and detonate the sun into a nova. They may escape to adjacent worlds, but the Nexus world and everything there will be destroyed.

I Dare Korval

Assuming the dragon isn't intelligent and simply gives her a scale for her assistance in helping it escape.

tom

Would have loved it if she had shown him a holo of deep space asteroid mining operations.

Canpinter

The average 16 year old human probably has a better grasp on math then almost all the nobility of the nexus baring a few people with specialist training.

Michael Halpern

possible, but they want subjects, not too many corpses. bioweapons are very difficult to control

Michael Halpern

Im going to guess she has DU too. for her rail gun if against targets that really need it

SoylentPudding

Sudden thought. The Nexus has knowledge of cellular biology and most newly contacted realms don't. I wonder how many defiant newly contacted realms ended up suffering a mysterious plague that only Nexian medical magic could contain?

Michael Halpern

the other problem is HEM, they'll likely have to complete the dreadnaught to deal with him.

Meteroson

Literally all humanity needs to do is get a spaceship to the nexus and rain down orbital bombardment onto the capital and they're done. We'd have total orbital control and can easily mine asteroids for resources. The only actual problem is getting there in the first place.

Michael Halpern

that's an advanced subject, she probably wants confirmation that the Nexus has WMDs first before discussing what Earth has,

Michael Halpern

she doesn't have to, just use it as raw material for manufactured goods

ArdenW

Emma: "Ohhhh... so the Nexus dominates adjacent realms on first contact through threatening economic devastation by making their previous economic systems based on scarcity of precious metals fail by crashing their markets with an influx of gold, devaluing the currency and causing hyperinflation. Mansa Musa accidentally did that once upon a time when he went on tour." (Cooks for a few seconds.) Also Emma: "Yeah... that's not gonna work against Earth."

Sigma1204

Should have mentioned we at least used to use Platinum for prosthetics and surgical replacements. See their response to medical technology from the 20th century

TheArchivist

“The deluxe kobold started by attempting to sink one of his MANY SHARP TEEFS into the coin, before devolving into outright nibbling on it, as if attempting to gnaw out some shavings from it.” PLEASE KEEP THIS IN REVISION OH MY GODDDDDD

Arkeilam

I expect that Emma might be able to launder a good deal of this to Sorecar for quite a lot of attuned gold. Even in the Nexus, Tungsten, Titanium, and Iridium mustn't just grow on trees.

Ragnar Pendon

Make it 20 🙃

Michael Halpern

rubix cube of wealth

Legijas

Kinda wish we heard Emma mention that we only use transmutation to acquire metals that don’t occur naturally (it’s not like we don’t do that today with Pu). I’d really like to know if they have a concept of such materials.

Michael Halpern

Thalmin will get firepower overload after Emma deals with the dragon

Brachy LP

I give it 3 to 10 Chapters

Brachy LP

Yes there Literally Deadly to Humans... Hooray

Michael Halpern

probably as a currency but held as For Ex rather than domestic circulation, use it to buy stored mana

Leon

makes sense, treat it like a resource like uranium, not as a currency (i.e., general use or circulation)

Brachy LP

jup thats were i stumbled

Michael Halpern

when Emma one shots a dragon

Michael Halpern

basically, though extracting the mana to do things like power portals would be valuable

Michael Halpern

probably troy ounces in this context.

Gamerdestiny6

Emma used Incredible Wealth!!! Illunor has fainted!!

Brachy LP

I am actually Surprised we still Use Ounces and some other Imperial Units in the Future, not a Critique it's just an Observation since Metric is getting so Prevalent.

HiMyNameIsFelipe

The lizarf now hibernates

Leon

Attuned coins would be worse the worthless to humans since magic is radiation, right?

Michael Halpern

yup, just wait until Ilunor learns about the literacy rate

Cariuss Shadow

So economic victory is out for The Nexus, Culture victory it's next to impossible with competing ideologies, when is the gang going to find out a military victory is laughable.

Gustav Frstn

After Sorcar, Ilunor is my favorite character. A lovable brat 😆

Michael Halpern

looking forward to the discussion of asteroid mining

Canpinter

Earth still has a distinct trade advantage in mass production of cheap consumer goods that they could flood the nexus with. The nexus can't match that because anything they tried to sell to humans would you know..melt them.

Venpice

I was wondering where the crafting metals came from but a Wealth Cube goes crazy hard. What a flex.

bonk proof

Well looks like the kobald has finally succumbed to the reality that Earth realm is much more advanced that they seem. Also I expect the memes that come out of this chapter in 2 weeks to be great.

Willow Arkan

lol precious metal overload.

Steve Desamos

He has a MONOCLE?! And nobody thought to include this in his official art???

Mr.Jaxon

First! Also, great chapter! Can’t wait for the next one!
