architectural engineer

thats a very good point

Zaxus Lanterus

I don't think she would want to reveal she has the capability to do that (the mana pump). I am also unsure how she would store it. She is unlikely to have much, if any, extra mana-proof material to store it since it was basically said her suit was made of pretty much all they had because it was insanely difficult to make. Also, it might be unlikely they sent any spare material, because if she needed it she would almost certainly already be dead. Although, the mana pump must use it by necessity. ... Actually, now that I think about it, those lines about the rarity of the mana-proof material confuse me due to the existence of the tent... But assuming it's as rare as the earlier chapters said, I think she would not risk it, especially when she can just break spells by poking them. But I could be wrong. We haven't had a very good description of her full inventory. -Edit- Oh, and she's already shown the entire school that she has insane magic resistance from the signing shenanigans. So, she isn't really losing any tactical advantages by just further exploring that. It is perhaps the easiest and simplest solution. Although... Emma doesn't always go for those...

Michael Halpern

she may be able to do a spell breaker, that's just releasing a bunch of mana at once to disrupt a spell, that can feasibly be done with mana pumps

architectural engineer

actually tho now that i think of it maybe its an idea she came up with via the new magic wand thing

architectural engineer

That's why I think magic resistance should work, doesn't seem like her usual type of chicanery.

Zaxus Lanterus

This seems plausible.

Zaxus Lanterus

I sincerely doubt it will be flying. She specifically mentioned not using her usual tricks, which I am pretty sure means bullshitting her way around with feats of advanced active technology. She seems to not want to steal the show and instead let the rest of the group shine. She showed her physical prowess, now it's the for the other to show off what they can do with their magic.

Zaxus Lanterus

It won't be flying. I'm pretty sure that qualifies as one of her "usual tricks" like "Drones, fireworks, light shows, all ‘disqualifiers’[...]".

Zaxus Lanterus

She will likely not risk that machine for something like a house choosing ceremony. It is irreplaceable, bulky to move, and she knows they don't have the ability to do the same things it does and they have discussed how having that ability is a piece to a huge method of disrupting the status quo. And it will let her eat real food and not paste. That's a huge motivator to leave it where it is and do nothing that might get is confiscated, lost, sabotaged, or stolen.

Michael Halpern

spell breaker pump mana into vessel and release it

Casualscifienjoyer

Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony!

Brachy LP

Welcome to the Magical Talentshow what will you be showing us? "How I will make all of you useless"

Bradiation

Yeah, the only reason it got added in here, was because of a comment I made on the last post... So I was just trying to correct the record a little bit

Skrzynek

It'd be one thing if Emma was a dum-dum just throwing those terms as part of a word salad, another if she corrects Auris in this very chapter about the de facto/ de jure. I think since she does it here in the same conversation warrants such pedantism on your part, mate.

Bradiation

I hate to be that pedantic a-hole buuuut: “So… I’m guessing the class sovereign is like, the de-facto leader or representative of the year group or something?” Technically it seems that the class sovereign is both de-fact and de-jure representative of the year group. (i.e. by both the fact of precedent and by the law of the land, class sovereign represents the year group) A good way to think of it is the governor general role in Australia. By law (de-jure), the governor general is selected by the King. By fact (de-facto) the king gets told which person to make the governor general by the Australian prime minister. This de-facto process is still legally binding due to common law and precedent, its just not written down anywhere. However, you wouldn't say that the governor general is "de-facto" the head of the executive in Australia. They have this position by both the fact of the prime minister choosing them, and by the written law that says the king chose them for the job. Now you might say something like, the King is the de-jure leader of Australia, but the prime minister is the de-facto leader... but this doesn't really seem to be applicable to this case... As I said, sorry to be a pedantic a-hole, I just like bitching about civics.

I usually have some kind of “that was expected” reaction to JCB borrowing plot elements from other things like LOTR and Harry Potter, but reading Emma’s Holy Grail bit made me laugh pretty hard.

Skrzynek

I think we'll hit a nice, even 70 chapters of absence once we finally hit that meeting :v

architectural engineer

maybe its her ability to resist magic?

Skrzynek

It does not interact with magic, though. Meanwhile dispelling has been demonstrated before to be part of their curriculum. Not only that, but the flight module was said to be very, very loud (Chapter 33). I have doubts that jet engine sounds will ENHANCE the show in any way.

Michael Halpern

that or fly,

Skrzynek

Making mana potions with human tech would be very cool use of what Emma has, but I think it'll require some R&D before she can do that (as it's gonna be a breakthrough, and JCB usually makes Emma WORK for those). For the house choosing? I think she's gonna use her power to DISPEL EVERYTHING! :D

Ferr

Wonder if its mama removal. AKA the food and air lock. And she ends up making mana potion with out potions skill.

Proto

Card tricks!

Michael Halpern

flying probably, because they don't think its possible without magic.

Michael Halpern

"She flies now!?"

Michael Halpern

no, that's something to keep under wraps

UC-79

Props to Etholin for not panicking Invisibility poncho time? Just disappear on stage and let the peer group do their thing(s), then pop back in at the end.

architectural engineer

i wonder what the magic trick will be!

Ultimatecalibur

Oh god they are going to win the house choosing ceremony and thereby become Sovereign candidates.

Canpinter

"ok llunor my magic trick is just going to be resisting magic so i need you to.." "shoot you with magic?! DONE!" *lightning bolts and fireballs*

Steve Desamos

Please tell me it isn’t going to be card magic or sleight of hand

ThomasMC

threw a sword att you Typo

Nul Atlas

I can smell a Holy Grail reference from two galaxies away. Great work as always JCB keep it up!

ethan

Nice Monty Python reference 😄. I hope we meet an illustrious wizard named Tim 😏

Fienryra

I keep wanting to scream “just kiss already!” When I see the cute ferret boy but I’ve also realized that this can fit like 8 different character pairs. Alas, the Nexian social conventions don’t allow us to have slinky ferret BFs day one ;-;

Skrzynek

:D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88DZhwKqHM4

Michael Halpern

the one trick is resist everything, isn't it?

Spencer

I don't know how I got here so early, I showed up before the Patreon notification dropped. Good luck I guess! Solid chaper, it was nice seeing Etholin validated. Magic talent show sounds way better than the hat from harry Potter I had in my mind up until now. That said, it would be cool to show off tech at the magic show, which is what I had in mind right up until the "I'll take the backseat, thanks" Emma passed out at the end of the chaper. I wonder what the rest of the gang would have to show off, not like we've seen too much beyond utility in the spells they've cast. Aside from thalmins midnight almost drowning things have been pretty tame. I hope we see some fun specialties when they finally do show off!

Simon Pitre

She gonna fly I bet

ArdenW

"Strange women lying in ponds" speech detected. Commencing "quote the speech followed by howls of laughter" protocol.

Willow Arkan

oooh shenanigans are being concocted. On a different note, still dangling the fate of Rila in front of us, heh.

Pierre Florendo

Oo - merchant class discussion!
