Michael Halpern

Well Emma is on a time limit to acquire a new shard of impart

Michael Halpern

orbital rings are a few orders of magnitude smaller than ring worlds, a ring world is built around a star similar to a solid shell Dyson sphere but with less coverage

Marshel Helsper

Ooh shit! The ring around Earth! Lol "I know what this is. We have, like, 4 of them."

Marshel Helsper

I really like this. If it's true it'll have Emma going, "oooh. I see what happened here." and she'll immediately be a leading expert of the Nexus on the Nexus.

Michael Halpern

probably going to be worth putting it in the context of WW2, the Tokyo firebombing was more deadly than the nukes after all. and the alternative - an opposed landing like what was done in Normandy, would have been more costly plus there's the deterrence value

Michael Halpern

she probably has ISR railgun rounds

Michael Halpern

well he is a Nexian

Conor

It's probably worth remembering Ilunor is explaining the 'realm' through a lense of supremacist propaganda so pretty much everything he says is at the same time politically and scientifically suspect. That's not to say it is incorrect just that it cannot be relied upon.

Michael Halpern

Ilunor is a Nexian, his world is the Nexus

tom

There is a clear contradiction in their cosmology. We know that at least Thacea's homeworld is a bog standard planet like Earth. From Ilunor's comments about photos from orbit being some sort of cartography, we can surmise that the same is true for Ilunor's and Thalmin's worlds as well. Yet the Nexus would have you believe that their cosmos expands 2 dimensionally on a plane by continuously creating habitable landmasses and oceans, which by itself is nonsensical unless it is an artificial and directed process.

Google Google

Has anyone noticed the pattern. I'm getting the feeling that Emma Is using the discount Dragon As a baseline, "How would a nexian would react to Knowledge of her world". Since he is high Religious levels of towards the Nexus. If you know what I mean.

CTsquad501st

Here i go wanting to skip time to get to the goods

King Jerkera

I can understand that take but I don’t think weapons are going to be what’s next but it indeed be weaponry that’s next on the docket. It’s more about what’s going to trigger the next human lessons time.

King Jerkera

They did a little bit but they don’t know that there’s a ton of humans who hate even the idea of aristocratic government or even ideals of it. They also don’t know why it’s really important for them know how that came to be

Duplicitous Michael

I believe the next session will be after some event where Emma might be forced to reveal the capabilities of her armor to the extent the group(mainly Thalmin) will want to know just how Earthrealm has developed destructive weapons without mama. It’s already been touched upon heavily this sight seer session, Thalmin has burning questions, and they’re gonna be answered sooner rather than later.

Michael Halpern

Thalmin will probably take note of the comment about how long ago all this took place was, Ilunor is probably going to be more convinced that Earthrealm is the proficized "other" but will be less certain as to which side really is the side of civilization, after all Humanity surpassed their natural limitations without the luxury of magic, by organizing massive industrial might

UC-79

Thacea is getting more curious about what Emma looks like under the armor 👀 Illunor's just going through it, I hope we get his/Thalmin's reflection on this presentation, I'm sure they've both got a LOT to say on the matter.

Michael Halpern

automated mining ships still expanding it. point is though they see their home star through a camera obscura, they even describe the physical construction of a camera obscura with their understanding of the sky, and every other realm works like Earth based on observational evidence, this means that the Nexus is not a natural formation, based on statistical evidence.

Hughes Andrew

I did not say it was infinite, I said it was infinitely expanding. It *has* an edge, a fact that has been mentioned repeatedly, and can be easily shown next time ilunor wants to use the sightseer, just like how he showed the veil between the nexus and the realm of infinite magic above it.

Michael Halpern

the "fun" thing about civilizations on ring worlds and dyson spheres, is that if civilization collapses they can lose knowledge that the very nature of the megastructure obscures from rediscovery, and the Nexian civilization has collapsed several times

Michael Halpern

simple it isn't infinitely expanding, its just so large and they lack the means to circumnavigate it in a practical span of time so it appears infinite. which would be true of a Dyson sphere or a ring world. this also explains the transportarium network, this would be the structure's mass transit system, HOWEVER they lack the understanding to fully utilize it, its very likely that the "getting grabbed" by the network when you get too high doesn't put you somewhere as randomly as it appears, but rather they lack the understanding to be able to aim with it. edit we know its not truly infinite, because it hasn't collapsed into a singularity yet.

Hughes Andrew

And the fact that the nexus is infinitely expanding? The fact that new material is constantly added onto the edges, and only the edges, not all around like a constantly expanding sphere, or ring would grow?

Michael Halpern

JCB great use of Camera Obscura.

Michael Halpern

Their "openings" are camera obscura, aka Pinhole cameras, that's why the primavale looks like a star, the way their day night cycle works is exactly how it would for a ring world or a Dyson sphere, even HEM's major feats can be explained by it being a megastructure.

Hughes Andrew

You appear to be suffering from fundamental systemic incongruence. There is no evidence for a ring world theory, nor any evidence that the nexus has a technological origin. Try to be more open minded lest you end up like poor Ilunor, desperately applying the rules of your realm to one that works differently.

Michael Halpern

The primavale IS a star, as viewed through a pinhole camera. they have a normal reality, just in a ring world that converts solar power into mana

tonright

I use TTS to listen to these and can confirm it is "iL". I'm going to enjoy calling him LLunor very Welshly going forward though

Kyle Hall

Thinking about this, how would the Nexus react to a nebula? Like if the surface of the sun reminds them of the primavale, do they even HAVE nebulas?

tom

I want her to build a rocket with whatever fancy tech she has at her disposal, with Ilunor as the payload, so he can have a look.

Michael Halpern

they will, right now they are all just processing.

Michael Halpern

she probably has radar too, would be better for seeing through the "cloud cover"

Rex

can we have her just go outside and lidar ping the moon to find out how far it is, its established she has lidar for her environmental systems, it wouldent be much of a stretch to bounce lidar off the moon

Michael Halpern

it's hard to tell if it's a sphere or a ring world,

Michael Halpern

If the Nexus is really a megastructure, HEM pulled a Wizard of Oz. All of HEM's physical feats are a lot more doable if you have access to a control node of a megastructure.

Michael Halpern

We know that the Nexus has had MULTIPLE civilization collapses, that would mean important records from the first ones will have most likely been lost. but regardless, their primavale is a star, it would last a long as time, especially if it underwent star lifting to reduce its mass, its either a Dyson Sphere or a ring world, we don't have enough information to determine which, but either one can work with a pinhole camera sky.

Michael Halpern

i kinda want Emma to show existing and conceptualized mega structures. planetary rings, dyson swarm, ring world -in particular a simulation of the surface of a ring world)

Michael Halpern

iL i think. i mean technically... but only because entropy is a bitch.

Baneta

I wonder if Ilunor (is it iL or LL or Li?) would still consider our universe a dying realm if he saw a zoom out of the infinite galaxy’s and just how dense the observable universe is relatively speaking

Michael Halpern

they already touched on the political system in the first sight seeing bit

Michael Halpern

This does beg the question, how did the Nexus generate a big bang simulation. is it perhaps a hold over from the civilization that built the ring world/Dyson sphere. -I'm going with ring world for now, as the "tapestry" is functionally identical to the collection plates of a ring world. It would also explain why they think mana comes from above where its less accessible at high altitudes in adjacent realms, in adjacent realms it comes from life, in the Nexus, it comes from the solar collection plates. a ring world would appear infinite, and for practical purposes it nearly would be, from within, especially if you don't have full access to the transportation network, which the current Nexian civilization doesn't have, or they wouldn't need to use ships to explore the Nexus. they can only travel between points they know, or to a random nearby location.

Michael Halpern

HEM is rerouting power from the night sky projectors into himself... its not much for the ring world as a whole but for one person...

Michael Halpern

i wouldn't count on it, her armor isn't transparent to mana and she has been teleported before, the system may be able to detect her, better to stick with straight observation for now. she can work out if she can fit a projectile through the aperture on the pinhole camera later.

Ignacy Olszta

Moon's Haunted.

Ragnar Pendon

look... I can already hear the blaring of the shiphorn from beyond the horizon that is the SS Birdknight

Timothy Sar

I hope next class prompts martial discussion and finally prompts the “realm buster” question. And then it clicks they’ve had these capabilities for 1k+ years and have only improved it. Good Segway for rocketry

Google Google

With her current technology she would probably able to do a test on the barrier in the sky. Since there is no mana on her the barrier will simply not react. that's my theory

Gregory Sampson

I suppose Thalmin may not be aware of this, but there is massive psychological overlap between religion and ideology. Ideologies are, in some sense, basically shriveled psuedo-religions.

Aaron Stewart Nagy

I would warn against using dark matter/energy as a descriptor, that's a placeholder for the math not working that I would hope has been figured out by 1000 years in the future.

King Jerkera

Ah it’s sad that lizard dunking session must end but now we get more magic world building. A question do you know what the next earth lesson is going to be on? Because I think touching politics is going to go very… badly in the group dynamic due to them finding out how much of a opposite earth politics is. However perhaps starting with religious ideas might be a better start into the understanding of humanity.

Tainted_But_Thriving

I guess my thought was, instead of the nexus being on the *outside* of the sphere, they're on the *inside* of the hollow structure. Hence why the "primavale", literally the surface of a mana-providing star, lies above their transportium network membrane. Sure, Ilunor's creation myth wherein this dead world is a bunch of fractured pieces of the primavale certainly refutes this theory... but I don't necessarily buy it. I think if the nexus was advanced enough to contain the power of the primavale and build this magical tapestry holding it back, then they wouldn't even need a full Dyson Sphere built. They just need to be able to have a tapestry along the edges protecting civilization, using the mana power of the primavale star to continually generate civilization until it eventually surrounds the entire star in a few million years depending on expansion rate...

Michael Halpern

she could probably print a good kit. honestly i would get a spectrograph of the Nexian sun, as well

ANTIcarrot

Or galaxies, and other large scale 'structures'

ANTIcarrot

More to the point, make one for the Nexus' sun. Cam you see sunspots? If you put in a shadow disk, can you see a solar corona, or arcs in the corona? If Illunor's understanding is correct, you should see none of those things. If you do see them... Even better. Ask Buddy if they can repeat the test inside the library, with a simulated skylight. It might be fascinating if the library's 'physics engine' knows how to simulate a star, but the library doesn’t know what a star should look like. NB: This is one reason why she absolutely should have a telescope kit in one of those boxes of hers.

ANTIcarrot

Silly Thalmin. Everyone knows the moon isn't haunted. It's Mars that has the space probe eating poltergeists. Haunted moon indeed...

Michael Halpern

its how their day night cycle works, and their reaction to seeing a filtered image of Sol. it almost perfectly matches what you'd expect from a sphere or a ring world, with solar collection plates providing the Day/Night cycle. in this case, the plates are designed such that they act as a pinhole camera

Michael Halpern

if negative entropy existed, heat engines wouldn't work.. which means everything would die.

Alexander Leith

Nice chapter! Really enjoyed it and thought it was a good conclusion to the most recent educational session with the gang. I'm a little surprised none of the gang reacted to Emma's comment about it being a millennium since those first flights though.

Ultimatecalibur

Considering that Niven's Ringworld is 1.6 Million km wide and that would take 160,000 hours of foot travel at 5 km/h to reach the edge if you started from the exact center and headed directly to either edge. Traveling 12 hours each day it would take someone 36.5 years to reach the edge if you went the right direction and it would take even longer if your travel angle deviates even a small amount. That would seem infinite to most. The Nexus could be a "sheathed" ringworld.

architectural engineer

cannot wait for the crazy lizards next pov

Michael Halpern

... Emma, start planning to produce telescopes with solar filters for everyone who is willing to try when they get home.

Tazeell

That got way more interesting than I ever expected. Fascinating conclusions from our discount kobold friend.

The Dark Lord 4416

yeah, I mean since in the story we already got Emma dissassembling the projector, we aren't gonna get something now but definitely not long in the future. Obviously just speculation but I feel something like this coming up very soon

Peter Altieri

I know this will not happen anytime soon but I would love for Emma to show the gang black holes. It might even be easier to understand because they probably have the ability to summon them already using magic

John the Gamer

Am a little curious what king Kobold will do when Emma eventually shows them black holes, quasars, pulsars and magnetars.

Skrzynek

We must have read two different chapters. I see no evidence whatsoever for the Nexus being a Dyson sphere, and many against.

Skrzynek

I think we gonna have sleep time instead. It's quite apparent Thacea does not want to exhaust Emma further, and Emma is very much exhausted.

Skrzynek

It would be very poetic then, that the inhabitants of the Nexus do the same that their realm does - selfishly siphon resources from elsewhere to perpetuate their impossible standard of existence.

Xylophone Smith

ilunor must scream but has no mouth so he is going mad instead

QueequegTheater

A lot of people saying the Nexus is a Dyson Sphere but I came to a much darker conclusion: in order to maintain the literally infinite energy required for its primavale, *the Nexus is siphoning energy from all the other realms*, and that's where entropy comes from.

Rust

Fantastic, I absolutely love this one. Very well done on how you broached the space race, looking forward to interstellar travel! Idk but im really looking forward to the point where Emma is asked for the population count of her realm and has to say x billion from y planets

Envil

I understand more as in nothingness itself is expand (aka the "space" between everything) not that it's expanding and creating more space

David Ellis

The nexus being a universe with negative entropy would be amazing. And it could also bring out the worst in humanity to escape to it and actually achieve eternal life...

Immortalloon

Personally, I think the nexus is closer to a ringworld where the atmosphere is thick enough no one can see more than a hundred miles or so. They only think it's infinite as no one has found an edge

Google Google

One very concerned that everyone's minds is, the discount Cobalt, what mental state he's in. Hopefully he'll get therapy.

Bloop

Negative energy allows for some truly cataclysmic things, along with entropy reversal and time travel/paradoxes. Even without that, Alcubierre drives release a bust of radiation when they stop comparable to the entire mass-energy of the ship and halo.

Google Google

It makes sense now!!!!

Google Google

It makes sense now!!!!

Bloop

considering that they seem to have something like alcubierre drives, if those work anything like they do in GR, they have the ability to destroy galaxies.

Bbobsillypants

Emma's needs to have talk with Evi about an auto mute

Michael Halpern

probably a pretty big conversation with EVI

Michael Halpern

this means it would have a Lagrange field between the star and the collection plates.

Michael Halpern

if its a sphere there's going to be access to the interior, and exterior,

Bbobsillypants

Emma's getting sloppy with that mute button

Cepheus

Yea don't know if theyre ready for humanity's destructive potential

Owen Wasik

Oooo I like this theory, perhaps a Dyson sphere where the star has expanded to a red giant, requiring the described planar mages to protect the Nexus from the intense radiation with some kind of mana shield? And the disappearance of the other stars in the sky the result of the completion of the sphere?

Jared Collins

Idk about the Dyson sphere. I'm thinking that the nexus is more akin to a universe that is in a continuous big bang. That's where all the magic is coming from, the ridiculous amounts of energy being released by the very universe itself, then being channeled by the mages.

The Dark Lord 4416

We gonna have a one on one Emma-under-the-armor reveal with Thacea like the stargazing?

Zaxus Lanterus

Is she generalizing the creation and expansion of the universe? From my understanding (which I admit may be wrong), all of the universe came into existence simultaneously all at the same time. There is no "center of the universe." It went from singularity to infinity. What is expanding is literally space, as in the emptiness between points, not "reality." That's what will cause the heat death of the universe is that everything will eventually move to far apart to form anything anymore.

Arkeilam

yee

windoverwaves

Well. Parallel reality, or all Nexus is is really a dyson sphere that got gobbled up by its star, but built so tough that it'd stayed there, and self regulated enough to maintain the gravity onboard

Tainted_But_Thriving

Humans are dark elves confirmed Nexus is a Dyson sphere almost confirmed. High above is the Sun, below is likely nothingness

Ciberj1

Loved this chapter JC. Your writting is always peak

Branchen

Ooh the missile fakeout, thalmin would be floored by our ability to indiscriminately vaporize villages from orbit.

Hunter
