We just installed a tri-dispenser-thing in our shower. It's meant for an RV, but is working well and much easier to use than all the bottles we had laying around. Can use it with eyes closed. Frees up a lot of room on our shower shelves too.

Steve

I think only Thacea and Thalmin know cuz they were both with Emma at the time in the library. Ilunor might cuz he had the cloak but idk

Drunk Pop-Tart

I mean, i have glasses and i would hate to have them on in the shower blurry vision or not. They'd get in the way of washing my face and hair, soap would get on them and dirty the lens so i'd have to clean them afterwards. All around bad time for me personally. I have bad vision but it's not like i'm blind, i can still make out what a shampoo bottle is with no glasses.

David

That is a concept I hadn't considered. But if it is all just "energy" at the end of the day and it can be safely converted this makes sense too. Excited to see how this shakes out.

Marshel Helsper

Wouldn't stars then disappear from those other realms? Has that been observed anywhere other than the Nexus that we know?

Marshel Helsper

Does the whole gang know that Emma herself isn't fluent? Or just Thecea from her time with Emma in the Library? I forget, which if any. I know it has come up, though.

Marshel Helsper

Some people just can't see that well. Glasses in the shower with water on them is still better than blurry vision.

Michael Halpern

beyond the unforeseen details that prevent such observations, they only had so much space, she has to print and assemble more capable kit as needed

Michael Halpern

I interpreted it as lamp shading

ANTIcarrot

And you can determine that by mapping the CMB, or scanning for pulsars, or looking for familiar nearby galaxies. Hence why she should have some capable astronomy kit in those boxes of hers.

Michael Halpern

my take is that for all we know they could all be in our universe, and in the Milky Way even

Allen Mainville

That’d make sense to me. Find other realms, take them over, consume all but the single planet to power your own expansion.

Allen Mainville

Considering they come with an administrative AI and are presumably fairly water resistant, why not?

Michael Halpern

... and it essentially started with "Where art thou Emma"....

John Vistica

(1) Emma could do the pendulum test and see if the Nexus is rotating. (2) Ask how old the Nexus universe is. If they have the Big Bang equivalent figured out, they should have a concept for the age of their universe. Ours is 13.8 billion years old. The Nexus could be in the young pre-star hot plasma phase that is bathed in mana. Other realms may be older than the Nexus but still have mana. My new take from what we just learned is that someone from a standard magical realm came across a very early universe realm consisting of hot plasma/mana and created the Nexus realm.

ANTIcarrot

I think the astronomy module needs expansion, and some actual astronomy. However stunned Emma is, the AI should continue to do its job, and has no particular reason to be silent. Emma should have access to an approximate spectrum light curve for the 'moon' and an assortment of 'stars'. Do the light curves match? Do they fit black body radiation? Do they match any known material or emitter? Does the light curve look bizarrely and arterficially flat? The camera should also be able to determine relative movement, or lack there of, and whether that movement is linear or not. The twinkle could also tell you interesting things about the local atmosphere and gravity, which may or may not match predicted values (for planets) given local atmospheric composition. All of this could be done today with a few hundred euros of equipment, and about 5 minutes. We dont need the actual answers, just Emma's reaction to the AI getting stumped. I also think some of the above information not matching expectations might be scarier than simply a featureless moon.

Brachy LP

Well we know that The Nexus already Knows of Evolution, they had it in Atricord's introductory Class that Elves underwent Evolution

Michael Halpern

i mean whenever the evolution discussion comes up. Emma has purposely avoided that because it goes against a lot of creation myths rather directly,

Michael Halpern

@David, i would look more at the discrepancy between the official "mana coming from sun and moon" for adjacent realms and the lack of mana at high altitude for Aetheronrealm. the Nexus erroneously assumes adjacent realms work like the Nexus does, explaining the discrepancy by "the Nexus is just older" or "more perfect" that implies on the Nexus the higher you are the more dense mana is, this probably means that their tapestry converts solar power into mana and sends it down, with the "moon" being one of the more significant emitters- it would have to be, being responsible for tides as well.

Drunk Pop-Tart

Huh, I'll sleep less dumb i guess.

David

Part of m wonders if the nexus finds the ONE planet, eats the rest of the dimension/converts it into mana. Then uses that mana to grow the "never ending" nexus. They are flat earthers because the emperor tells them its true, and prevents them from seeing beyond the vial, as well as makes his home plane ever expanding.

Marshel Helsper

My wife showers with her glasses on. People do it.

Drunk Pop-Tart

"I sighed, stepping out of the shower now as I started wiping down my glasses." Did...did she just take a shower with her glasses on?

Christian E. Y.

I imagine Emma writing and drawing like the android in that movie with will smith

Christian E. Y.

Just wait until she includes pie charts and pictures. I cannot conceive of the academy not trying to get her to write about earthrealm political system of government and military capabilities at some point

Brachy LP

You mean in class?

Michael Halpern

that will likely wait until the evolution discussion comes up

Michael Halpern

i wonder how the Librarian would respond to that picture from Hubble from when they pointed it at the darkest part of the sky...

Michael Halpern

probably the same that they make of her fluency in High Nexian, though they may start getting suspicious of both

Steve

I do hope Emma actually proof-read her homework before handing it in. Only rookies make that mistake.

M

So still in the first half of the first school year, nice! Jk, I love the pacing as it is :)

Casualscifienjoyer

Funnily enough at the current pace the communication module won’t be coming into play until 2027

Casualscifienjoyer

Expect it in the early 2030s.

Michael Halpern

just a casual flex

Christian E. Y.

I wonder what her teachers will make of her printer-made ‘handwriting ‘

Chud Bronson

Woof this was a big and abrupt change in the stories mood

Canpinter

I love Qivs reaction to Emma's homework and what must seem to him to be her impossibly neat handwriting.

ghost01173430

Makes me wonder if EVI will just...take control of her and make things go on automatic

Xylophone Smith

the nexus elves are just a bunch of magical flat earthers

Jcb112

Thank you so much for the kind words ahh!! I was actually really nervous about the Emma and Thacea balcony scene since I wanted to transition into a more quieter and poignant scene especially after all of the big scenes we've had from the space chapters, so I was really worried if it would feel right! Moreover I was also really worried about how the interaction would go as despite planning these sorts of things already, I'm always worried if I'm actually going to be able to deliver both the dialogue and internal thoughts in a way that's compelling enough and in a way that's able to convey the sorts of vibes and emotions I want from the scene. So I really do appreciate your comment and feedback as a result! Thank you! :D

Destinum

Let's just put it this way... In the almost 2½ years this series has been ongoing, around a week has passed in-universe. We're absolutely the ones getting the short end of the stick here.

Marshel Helsper

I like the idea brought up in the comments for the previous chapter that the Nexus is some kind of ring world. There have been multiple civilizational collapses on the Nexus and the Emperor may just be someone who discovered the controls to the systems. I don't think it has occurred to Emma yet that the Nexus is artificial, so what she's seeing for their moon doesn't make sense. Also, if the world is large enough that they just keep discovering new places, rather than anything being made, then an illusion is there to show expansion. Maybe settling rights are tightly controlled, so no one really knows if it is expanding? Finally, to complete this mess of a comment, does teleportation require knowledge of the destination? Maybe no one can jump to the edge of the Farlands that haven't been there?

UC-79

No scene with illunor spazzing out in his room over space and technology as thalmin tries to sleep 😔 The bird flirting on the balcony though... phenomenal 🔥🔥🔥

UC-79

She has taint, so there's a chance she can exist in the bubble without getting raisin'd instantly.

Michael Halpern

that last lampshade bit made me think there would be. besides this is Vanavan's class

King Jerkera

But she does go over it so she can defend it.

King Jerkera

I hope not honestly each lesson has so much opportunity to understand the world and the class more!

King Jerkera

I very muchly agree that is more ominous than anything else in this chapter.

tripkt

I'm reminded of this part of the Tao Te Ching "Yet mystery and manifestations arise from the same source. This source is called darkness. Darkness within darkness. The gateway to all understanding. "

Gabu

The entire Nexus narrative has to be considered somewhat suspect. I think this only further enforces that the Nexus is a pocket dimension hence all the magical fakery to replicate normal cosmology. I believe adjacent realms are actually like Earth but following Nexus invading they just give up on studying astronomy and accept the fake model the Nexus uses. Remember as well that the Nexus hides the sky initially because it's apparently a giant magical light show that would surprise new adjacent realms implying their skies aren't like that. I'm increasingly convinced that the Nexus is an entirely artificial dimension created by their magic emperor to be a seat of power he has full control over.

Fluffy Lemur Tails

I'm sure JCB will write something up. :3

Willow Arkan

dimensional travel might not be comparable to long distance travel though. except if they are capable of teleporting freely from one point in a dimension to any other point in the other in both directions. then again in nexus teleportation seems to be done by means of an intermediary space, not clear if it is a dimension in and of itself, so speed of teleportation might be limited to the speed of travels in that in-between space and how distances there map to distances in the nexus.

Willow Arkan

I wonder how well Thacea would fare in a mana desaturated environment, would she be able to keep her own internal mana from diffusing.

Michael Halpern

its still a problem with magic, magic is a form of energy, with a maga structure you don't want passive requirements to consume all your energy

Hughes Andrew

They can teleport across dimensions, I doubt there’s a distance limit. Also gravity is only a problem if it’s not magicked away, which it probably is. The nexus is not possible with physics, but with magic it is.

Nul Atlas

JCB, you write liquid gold with every chapter release. That balcony scene was just an amazing moment between Emma and Thacea, thank you for the wonderful work you have created!

ghost01173430

That Acknowledged sounds far more ominous than it should

TheEagerReader

The print wouldn’t be so accurate.

Fluffy Lemur Tails

When will Emma be able to kiss the birdy? Emma is the cutest arachnid.

Brachy LP

I like both the Crew getting fed Humans Achievements and the Political Intruige of The Academy. But I can't wait till we get to either the Library or Dragon Quests. Also I now Ship it. Thaecia and Emma have such Chemistry and this is either going to be the greatest Sismance or actual ship. Also the Uniform dig is so fun. I just can't wait till the Gang learns how Humans Look. Gaaaahhhh I just want to learn MORE About Everything going on at the Same time because you are so good at writing setup and intruige

Legijas

Their magical pens are an equivalent to printers, they even mentioned being able to change colour and the font of the ink

Bbobsillypants

Emma can always fall back on the fact that she's known for pausing for like a full minute between being asked a question and answering it.

Michael Halpern

time skip?

Legijas

If the professor decided to call on her, she could always have EVI give her a script

Bbobsillypants

Cant wait to find out what Evi came up with for Emma's homework assignments, be funny if she got accused of cheating. I don't know if there rules about having and A.I do your homework in the nexus or some magical equivalent, but Evi did do the assignment on minimum power, though I'm sure E.V.I is much better than the generative A.I of today. She likely at least will not be accused of copying someone else's but whose to say how weird the tone of the paper might come across. God forbid she's put on the spot and told to actually explain what she's written.

Bbobsillypants

I like the detail or Qiv looking between the paper and Emma's gauntleted hands wondering how she was so precise and consistent writing with gloves. I don't think the student body even knows she has a tent, much less an ink jet.

Gawain Dragon

First i was thinking how jelous Emma would be of us, then i realised it's not just a few ours we have to wait... Emma wins this round!

TheEagerReader

I can’t wait for the next chapter. We get to see school begin. Seeing Emma just give speeches to her classmates about human achievement is best in small doses. I’m here for the intrigue and maneuvering at the academy.

IHasArms

You know, I'm really curious about how the Nexus' expansion works. If I remember properly, one of the theories for the death of our universe is it collapsing in on itself from it's own weight. If the Nexus were to be expanding at the same rate as our universe then, they would end up being wiped out first due to having a lot more mass. But something tells me that isn't the case and that they are expanding at a much slower rate, seeing as they know that the Nexus is expanding without having anyway to travel at the speeds and distances of interstellar travels. Sure they have there teleports, but they likely have limits to the distance.

cwtheking

Amazing work, great job on the balcony scene.

TheEagerReader

I think the fact Emma printed the work will come up. The printing press is probably still in a barely industrial version. A single individual wouldn’t have access to it.

Ragnar Pendon

Ahhhhh.... we have a week before the dragon again That's gonna be the perfect cap to this arc on December 😅

Michael Halpern
